CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Lehigh women's rowing team capped off a tremendous season of progress by making history at the Patriot League Championship Friday on the Cooper River. All three of Lehigh's boats advanced to the grand finals for the first time in program history, where the Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight became the program's first and second-ever medalists at the Patriot League Championship. In the end, Lehigh finished with a school-record 33 points, good for a tie for fourth in the final team standings.
The only other times Lehigh ever finished in fourth place was when there were only five teams in the league. Since the Patriot League expanded to nine teams, the highest the Mountain Hawks had finished was a tie for sixth (last season). Last season, Lehigh posted a then school-record 26 points before breaking that total this year.

"It took us a long time to get us to this point, but I think all of that culminated in today," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "What works best is when the athletes are the ones driving everything, and we have a group of athletes who are really doing that, led by our nine seniors."

Lehigh impressed in its preliminary races, as the Varsity Eight used a late surge to finish second in its heat with a time of 6:48.184, just ahead of Bucknell in third (6:49.252) and Colgate in fourth (6:51.764). That mark was the third-best time when including both heats. The Varsity Eight went on to place sixth in the grand final. A tight race saw third through sixth place separated by just over nine seconds. Bucknell came in third (6:26.719) while Lehigh was sixth (6:35.785).

"Sixth place in that Varsity Eight race is nothing to be ashamed of," said Conley. "That was an incredibly fast race. Navy came down the course in 6:16. Credit to them. At the same time, we were right in the mix with everybody else throughout the race. For us to be there is fantastic and goes to show how much we're pushing the upper levels of the league."

The Varsity Four was the last boat to row in the morning, coming in third (8:15.362) to become Lehigh's third boat to reach the grand finals. That set the stage for the crew to make history as the Mountain Hawks surged to a third-place finish (7:53.427) in the final to become Lehigh's first-ever medalist at the Patriot League Championship. Lehigh finished ahead of both Boston University (7:55.847) and Navy (8:19.099), who placed fourth and fifth overall.

"The Varsity Four was very focused on their task," said Conley. "They put themselves in an opportunity to do something. Navy faltered just for a moment, we took advantage and walked away with a medal."

The Second Varsity Eight impressed in the morning, winning its heat with a time of 7:07.737. In the grand final, the Mountain Hawks made a late push to finish just 0.038 seconds ahead of Bucknell for third place. Lehigh's final time was 6:51.134 while Bucknell finished in 6:51.172.

"The 2V put themselves out in a really good position right from the start," said Conley. "They ended up getting neck-and-neck with Bucknell and were able to skip by right at the very end. It was just a fantastic finish to the day."

The Mountain Hawks wrap up a season of firsts, including the program's first-ever NCAA Regional Ranking, the first Patriot League Boat of the Week in program history, the first Patriot League Championship medals in school history, the best league championship performance in program history and much more.

"The seniors were incredible this year, but they did a fantastic job of empowering the underclassmen with wanting those same sort of ideals and values that we have on the team," said Conley. "I'm excited to see where the underclassmen take it. They have a lot of work to do over the summer, which is completely on their own. If they come back ready to go, who knows what can happen next year. Maybe some more firsts for the program."
