Mountain Hawks and Leopards renew rivalry Wednesday night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Riding there straight victories, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team returns home for two straight games, beginning on Wednesday when it hosts archrival Lafayette at 7 p.m. Most recently, the Mountain Hawks improved to 6-2 on the road this season with a 15-11 victory at Holy Cross. With a win this Wednesday against the Leopards, Lehigh would clinch its fifth straight Patriot League Tournament appearance.

Lehigh stands 9-5 on the season and 4-2 in league play, needing a win to reach double-figure victories for a third straight season. The Mountain Hawks are among the national leaders in victories over the last three years, posting a 34-16 record since the beginning of 2016. Lehigh is currently tied with Colgate for third place in the league standings, but would own the tiebreaker due to its 12-6 win over the Raiders. Counting Wednesday's contest against Lafayette, only three regular season games remain.

On Saturday, sophomore Sondra Dickey led the way with career highs in draw controls (7) and caused turnovers (4) while adding four goals, two assists and four groundballs to earn Patriot League Midfielder of the Week honors for the fourth time this season. Senior Haley Wentzel and freshman Julianne Puckette each added hat tricks while junior Kellie Gough had two goals and an assist. Wentzel, senior Kayleen Kelly and sophomore Alexandra Ladda each tallied two caused turnovers as Lehigh caused 14 of Holy Cross' 20 turnovers for the game. Sophomore Samantha Sagi reached double-figure saves for a second straight game, making 13 stops.

Lafayette stands 4-9 on the season, including 1-4 in league play. The Leopards' lone Patriot League victory has come against Bucknell via a 15-10 final. Lafayette won its other three games consecutively in nonleague play, topping Manhattan, East Carolina and St. Bonaventure. Jane Kirby leads the offense in both goals (47) and points (53) while Emma Novick owns 34 goals and 38 points. Hannah Davey has 25 points (22 goals, three assists) along with 29 groundballs, 14 caused turnovers and a team-leading 62 draw controls. Elise Ashford leads a group of five Leopards with double-figure caused turnovers, owning 17 on the season while goalkeeper Quinn Lacy leads the team with 32 groundballs. Lacey owns a 13.36 goals against average and 0.407 save percentage between the pipes.

The Mountain Hawks are 27-21 all time against the Leopards, having won four straight in the all-time series. Last year, Lehigh exploded for 20 goals in a 20-11 road victory. The game played out much differently than the 2016 matchup, which saw the Mountain Hawks pull out a low-scoring 6-4 victory at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

Following Wednesday's game, Lehigh remains home on Sunday to host Bucknell at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
