BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Maggie Tarmey picked up the first win of her collegiate career at Moravian's Coach P. Invitational, which concluded on Saturday evening. Tarmey's victory was one of two victories and five podium performances for the Lehigh women's track and field team at the two-day event, as freshman Brittany Curtin set a new meet record with her winning throw in the discus and junior Kaitlyn Toman took second place in the pole vault. Lehigh had strong support behind the winners as well, finishing one-two in two in both the hammer and discus.
The meet kicked off on Friday afternoon with Tarmey leading the way as four Mountain Hawks finished in the top eight of the hammer throw, which included a runner-up showing from Curtin. Tarmey's winning throw sailed a personal collegiate best 49.88 meters, besting her previous PR by 1.51 meters. Curtin finished runner-up at 48.70m and senior Paige Grossman followed in fourth place (46.43m). Senior Amanda Youngblood finished in eighth place at 44.61m in the event. The hammer throw featured 42 placers and LU was the only school with at least four athletes in the top 18 overall.
Curtin and Youngblood followed up their hammer performances by placing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the shot put. Senior Jennifer Burke got the meet started on the track on Friday evening by finishing seventh out of 15 in the 10K in 43:02.69.
On Saturday, senior Rachel Okun crossed the finish line in 15th place out of 50 runners in the 400m dash in 1:02.23. Senior Tyler Scanlin led the Mountain Hawks in the 800m run by finishing 12th in 2:26.81. Sophomore Jenn Mickens (2:28.34) trailed closely behind in 16th place in a race that had 49 finishers. Earlier in the day, Mickens led the way for Lehigh in 14th place out of 57 in the 1500m, crossing the finish in 5:06.29.
In Saturday's field events, Curtin captured the discus title with a meet record throw of 47.23 meters, besting the former meet record by 2.74 meters. The reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, Curtin came within 65 centimeters of her newly minted school record that she set last weekend. Youngblood helped Lehigh go one-two in the event by finishing runner-up at 41.01m, making the Lehigh duo the only two athletes out of the 37 in the event that registered marks over 40 meters.
Toman cleared 3.65 meters to take runner-up pole vault. She hit 3.65m on her second attempt, before raising the bar and coming up empty on three attempts at 3.95m. She cleared the same height as Monmouth's Casey Sturts, who won the event based on misses. Caity Reverand tied for fourth after being one of four to clear 3.20m. Freshman Brianna Wanbaugh (43.06m) had a nearly four-meter PR in the javelin, churning out a fourth place finish.
Alexis Wintle (16th) and Olivia Reinold (18th) each cleared 1.50m in the high jump. Armani Comick finished 12th of 40 in the triple jump (10.91m).
Lehigh had a large contingent of athletes open up competition on Saturday in the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell. The meet will run late into Saturday evening and throughout the day on Sunday. Check back to Lehighsports.com for a full recap following the conclusion Sunday's action from Bucknell.
