Schaeffer Takes Second and Lehigh Hits Three ECAC Marks at Bison Outdoor Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team finished up competition on Sunday evening at the Bison Outdoor Classic, hosted by Bucknell. Sophomore Brooke Schaeffer finished runner-up in the 800 meter run with the third fastest time in the Patriot League this season, and Hannah Patrick and Maura Henderson each hit ECAC qualifying marks over the course of the two-day event. Lehigh also earned a podium finish of third place from its 4x400 relay team.
On Saturday's first day of action, Patrick set a new personal record by hitting an ECAC qualifying mark of 45.39 meters in the javelin, which placed her seventh out of 38 competitors. Sophomore Jordan Otto tied for 13th in the high jump at 1.62m and sophomore Cate Shippee leapt 10.34m in the triple jump to finish 28th.
In Saturday night's track events, Henderson placed eighth overall in the 5K invitational out of 69 runners in 16:54.57, ranking as the No. 3 time in the PL. Finishing in 37th, junior Stacie Nadel finished with a career-best 17:27.87.
Sophomore Ashleigh Crawford led Lehigh in the 1500m invitational, finishing 26th of 63 in 4:34.91. Sophomore Hannah Bonaguidi came in next in 41st place in 4:37.28. In the unseeded 1500m, Lehigh placed two in the top 20 with Diana Hammerstone (PR-15th/4:46.51) and Stephanie Hayes (16th/4:46.90) coming in back-to-back.
Freshman Miranda Royds took seventh place out of 35 in the steeplechase in 11:09.44, shaving nearly 12 seconds off her previous PR from the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet last weekend.
On Sunday, Schaeffer's PR of 2:11.98 landed her in second place overall in a crowded field of 128 racers. She was the highest placing NCAA student-athlete in the event and her time currently ranks third in the Patriot League this season. Sophomore Mary Casey also had a strong race by placing 12th overall (2:15.46) and coming within 0.89 seconds of her PR. Sophomore Sophie Antonioli rounded out the top 20 in 2:16.28 and Hanna Brosky took home 39th (2:19.25).
The 4x400 relay team earned a podium finish courtesy of Erin Racano, Brosky, Noreen Byrne and Morgan McConnell, who combined on the bronze medal performance of 4:02.96.
Byrne led the Brown and White in both the 100m hurdles, earning top 10 finishes in both with a ninth placement in the 100H (15.31) and sixth in the 400H (1:04.72). Racano took second in her 400H heat, which landed her in eight overall.
Senior Liyala Dickens paced LU in both the 100m dash (13.32) and 200m dash (27.71), placing 47th in both races. McConnell (1:00.36) finished in the top half of the 400m dash after racing to a 22nd place finish.
With 44 throwers in the hammer, senior Paige Grossman threw 49.51m to finish in a team-leading ninth place. One day after her win at Moravian, freshman Maggie Tarmey threw 46.25m to take 16th place, one spot ahead of senior teammate, Amanda Youngblood (46.21m). Youngblood also took part in the shot put (11.63m).
Caity Reverand cleared 3.40m to take home 16th place in the vault, and freshman Brett DeWeese took home fifth place in the long jump (5.20m).
Next weekend, Lehigh will once again be represented at three different meets, which includes the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton, the Virginia Challenge at UVA and the Greyhound Invitational at Moravian.
