DeWeese Wins Twice, Toman Ties Record as Lehigh Finishes Third at Lafayette 8-Way

EASTON, Pa. – Freshman Brett DeWeese picked up two wins in the 100m hurdles and long jump, and junior Kaitlyn Toman tied the school's outdoor pole vault record to help lead the Mountain Hawks to a third place finish out of eight teams at Saturday's Lafayette 8-Way Invitational. All told, Lehigh athletes captured titles in six different events, including Jordan Otto in the high jump, Diana Hammerstone in the 1500m and the 4x400 relay team. Lehigh also garnered seven-second place finishes and trio of third place tallies.
Lehigh also wrapped up its two-day competition at the Raleigh Relays at NC State on Saturday.
At Lafayette, Toman, who owns the school's indoor pole vault record (3.95m), tied the school's outdoor benchmark of 3.70m to take home first place. Freshman Madisyn Hawkins made it a top-two sweep for the Mountain Hawks by clearing 3.55m.
DeWeese captured first place by leaping a personal record 5.66m in the long jump for one of her two wins on the afternoon. Cate Shippee flew a personal-best 5.41 meters to land on the podium in third place, and competed in the triple jump where she placed fifth.
In one of its perennially strongest events, LU took home the top two spots, and four of the top six places in the D1 high jump, led by Otto (1.60m) and junior Tyler Bannister (1.55m). Olivia Reinold (1.55m) and Alexis Wintle (1.55m) followed in fifth and sixth. In the javelin, freshman Rebecca Price finished fourth among D1 throwers (32.88m).
In the relays, the 4x400 team also combined to take home gold and 10 team points as Brooke Schaeffer, Sophie Antonioli, Mary Casey and Hanna Brosky all combined to race 4:01.03. Lehigh's 4x100 relay team finished second among D1 schools in 50.30 with DeWeese, Iman Mosley, Morgan McConnell and Liyala Dickens.
DeWeese added her second title of the day on the track in the 100m hurdles in 15.22 seconds. Lehigh swept spots two through four in the 400m hurdles with Noreen Byrne (1:04.34) taking runner-up, Erin Racno (PR-1:04.51) finishing third and Kaja Skerlj (1:06.73) taking fourth.
McConnell sprinted her way to runner-up position with a 26.49 time in the 200m. Schaeffer (59.65) took runner-up in the 400m dash, with Casey (1:01.66) just off the podium in fourth. Antonioli led Lehigh in fourth place of the 800m run in 2:17.61, with Brosky finishing sixth.
Lehigh swept the top three spots in the 1500m with Hammerstone leading the way with a nearly 15-second PR of 4:47.18, followed by Laura Barnes (4:49.46) and Miranda Royds (4:49.55). Elyse Barkstrom finished fifth (4:55.59) to make it four Mountain Hawks in the top five.
Down in Raleigh, Stacie Nadel broke her personal record in the steeplechase by over eight seconds, crossing the line in 18th out of 41 in 10:46.70. Clare Severe paced Lehigh on Friday in the 1500m, placing 28th out of 136 runners in 4:29.30, just 0.66 seconds shy of the school record. Ashleigh Crawford followed in 42nd at 4:32.40.
Sophomore Hannah Patrick made her season debut in the javelin with a strong ninth place showing out of 31 competitors, throwing 41.72m. Freshman Brianna Wanbaugh debuted with a 17th place mark of 40.11m. Brittany Curtin PR-ed in the discus at 44.07m to lead Lehigh in 12th place. Paige Grossman also PR-ed (49.36m) to place 17th out of 39 in the hammer throw, and freshman Maggie Tarmey made her collegiate hammer throw debut at 48.37m.
Next up, Lehigh will head to Lafayette next Saturday, April 7 for the annual rivalry dual meet showdown with the Leopards.
