BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field programs are once again set to head across the Lehigh Valley to Easton for the school's annual outdoor dual meet against Lafayette. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the meet will now be on Sunday at 12:45 p.m. at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex.
The men's pole vault and women's hammer throw will get things underway at 12:45 p.m., and the 4x100m relays will kick off the track events at 1:15 p.m. The meet will run throughout the afternoon with the 4x400 relay scheduled as the final event at 4:15.
Both Lehigh teams have won five of the last seven outdoor duals against Lafayette and since 1990, the men have an 18-10 record against the Leopards while the women sport a 9-17 record over the same span. Last season, Lehigh captured the first sweep of the Leopards (indoor and outdoor track, plus XC) since 2011-12. The men won 12 events en route to a 114-89 victory as current senior Joseph Inglis won the 3,000m steeplechase and was named the Track Athlete of the Meet.
The women's team won 15 of the 19 events in 2017, including all eight field events in their 132-71 victory. Paige Grossman had three podium finishes including a win in the hammer throw, while fellow thrower Amanda Youngblood was named Field Athlete of the Meet after picking up two wins. Ashleigh Crawford was named the Track Athlete of the Meet for her victory and then-PR in the steeplechase.
Back in January, Lehigh swept the indoor dual from the Leopards with wins of 119-61 for the women, winning 14 of the 17 events and setting a record for the most points in program history against the Leopards. The men won 106-75 by sweeping seven events including three wins from Trevor Knowles and two wins from sprinter Emre Soybas.
In their most recent meet last weekend, Lehigh won six events at the Lafayette 8-Way. Knowles (110H), junior Kyle Sult (javelin), freshman Samuel Tapera, senior Michael Camera, freshman Sean Brown (800m) and senior Henry Paul (steeplechase) all earned victories on the same track that will host this weekend's meet. LU added seven runner-up finishes and five third place finishes at the meet to finish fourth out of eight teams. Lehigh also had a few runners compete at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina, where John Tolbert (steeplechase), Kyle Berman (1500m) and Jeffrey Kirshenbaum (10,000m) all hit IC4A qualifying times.
Last weekend at the 8-Way, the women took home six individual victories and took a third place team finish, with Brett DeWeese winning the 100m hurdles and long jump, and Kaitlyn Toman tying the school record (3.70m) in the pole vault. At the Raleigh Relays, Clare Severe finished 0.66 seconds off the school record in the 1500m.
