Stoudt Records Career-High 12 Strikeouts as Lehigh Falls in Doubleheader to Holy Cross

3/31/2018 7:32:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a heartbreaking, 4-2 extra-inning loss in game one of the day, Lehigh fell victim to a hot-hitting Holy Cross team in game two as the defending Patriot League champions rolled to a 11-4 victory to sweep the doubleheader on Saturday at Walker Field.

The Mountain Hawks (11-14, 1-4 PL) rallied back in game one to tie the game, 2-2, in the sixth inning before the Crusaders (9-11, 4-2 PL) scored twice in the top of the eighth and retired three-straight batters in the bottom half to clinch the game one win. The Holy Cross bats went to work to build a comfortable margin early and did not let up as the Crusaders compiled a season-high 23 hits in the game two win.

Levi Stoudt compiled a near lights out performance and one of the best outings by a Lehigh starter in recent memory in a no-decision loss in game one. The sophomore ace compiled a career-high 12 strikeouts with just one walk while he held Holy Cross to just two runs on five hits in 7.0 innings of work.

Stoudt's day began with three-straight strikeouts before surrendering a pair of runs, only one of which was earned, in the second inning. He then went on to scatter three hits in his final 5.0 innings as he retired 13 of the last 18 batters he faced.

The 12 strikeouts recorded by Stoudt is the most by a Lehigh pitcher in the last nine seasons. He has compiled double-digit strikeout totals twice this season.

Chris Kersey accounted for three of Lehigh's five hits in game one as he finished 3-for-5 with a run scored. His double in the sixth inning helped set the table for Mike Maguire's two-RBI triple, which tied the game.

In game two, Holy Cross caught a break and took an early lead on a two-run, bloop single that dropped just inside the right field line and just out of range of any Lehigh defensive player. The Crusaders broke up a comfortable six-run lead in the top of the second with four hits, including a two-run double and a RBI-triple.

The Crusaders proceeded to slip hits inside the foul lines and find the alleys, managing to elude the Lehigh defensive alignments for the remainder of the day. Holy Cross also received two stingy pitching performances, including a 5.2-inning relief appearance out of Liam Dvorak who did not allow a single run or hit.

Lehigh and Holy Cross will close out the three-game set with a single game on Easter Sunday. First pitch at Walker Field is set for 12 p.m.
