Lehigh Falls to Holy Cross in Weekend Finale

4/1/2018 4:30:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks capped off their home opening weekend with 8-0 loss to Patriot League foe Holy Cross on Easter Sunday. The Crusaders pulled away late with a four-run ninth inning to seal the win and clinch the weekend sweep.

Lehigh (11-15, 1-5 PL) began the day with a strong pitching performance by starter Jason Reynolds who had a no-hitter going through the first three innings. The sophomore got the first four Crusaders (10-11, 5-2 PL) to ground out and he retired nine of the first 12 batters before surrendering a lead-off single in the fourth.

The Mountain Hawks had runners on in the first and third innings, and nearly scored a run in the third. Matt Hand led off the third with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Yupp. Following a fly out, Mike Maguire came through with a single to center field and Austin Masel saved a run for Holy Cross as he threw out Hand at the plate for third out in the inning.

The play by Masel proved to be one of the most pivotal points of the game as Holy Cross did not surrender a hit in the final six innings, nor allow another runner to reach scoring position.

The Crusaders broke the scoreless tie in the fourth as Cam O'Neil scored from third as Lehigh turned a double play. Holy Cross manufactured a run in the sixth and scored on a squeeze play with runners on the corners.

Holy Cross extended the lead with two more runs in the eighth on a two-run flare single to right field by Cam Meyer. Lehigh managed to minimize the damage in the eighth as Hand came up with a great effort to get the lead runner at home for the second out, but the Crusaders sealed the win in the ninth with four more runs on four hits.

Holy Cross's Declan Cronin earned the win as he tossed 7.2 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and just two walks. Danny Barlok closed out the final 1.1 innings without surrendering a hit and compiled three strikeouts as he retired all four batters he faced.

Reynolds, who surrendered just one hit in his 6.1 innings of work, suffered the loss and is now 2-3 on the year. He struck out four batters and forced 12 ground outs while he was charged with just one earned run.

Lehigh will return to action on Tuesday as they continue their eight-game home stand. The Mountain Hawks will host Delaware at 3 p.m. in the semifinal round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
