Woltersdorf and Svanson No-Hit Saint Peter's in Home Opener

3/28/2018 8:26:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In their first official game since the formal dedication of J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park, the Mountain Hawks christened their home field in spectacular fashion on Wednesday with a 14-0 victory over Saint Peter's as freshmen pitchers Peter Woltersdorf and Matt Svanson combined for a no-hitter.

The no-hitter is the first for Lehigh (11-12) since Feb. 28, 2015, which also happened to be a combined no-hitter for Nick Macaione and Kevin Boswick who tossed 11 innings in a 2-0 walk-off victory over Iona. Woltersdorf and Svanson are the first freshmen pitchers to record a no-hitter, solo or combined, in program history.

The freshmen duo did not allow a ball out of the infield and did not allow Saint Peter's (0-14) to advance a runner to second base as catcher Joe Yupp caught a runner attempting to steal second in the sixth and James Bleming turned a 6-3 double play with Thomas Shumacher in the seventh.

Woltersdorf started the game and was perfect through the first 4.2 innings prior to hitting a batter in the fifth inning. Aside from surrendering a walk in the seventh, Svanson was otherwise perfect in his three-inning relief appearance.

Woltersdorf picked up his second victory of the season and improves to 2-0 on the year with a 1.10 ERA through seven total appearances. He compiled a season-high six strikeouts against Saint Peter's in a season-high six innings pitched.

Svanson collected the first save of his career as he tossed the final three innings in Wednesday's win and racked up three strikeouts in his longest outing of the year.

Woltersdorf, Svanson and Yupp combined for an all-freshman battery in Wednesday's win. Yupp has started the last two games behind the plate for the Brown and White and has not allowed a stolen base or a passed ball so far in his rookie campaign.

In addition to the outstanding show on the mound, Lehigh also compiled one of its best offensive performances of the season. The Mountain Hawks combined for their most hits (17) and most triples (4) in a game this season, while tying their season-high for the most doubles (5). The four triples hit on Wednesday is the most in a game since the 2009 season.

Chris Kersey led the way offensively with a career-high five hits and a career-high three RBI in a 5-for-5 performance, while he finished a home run shy of the cycle. His five are the most by a Lehigh player since John Elson hit five against Army on April 7, 2013. After Wednesday's performance, Kersey is .705 (12-for-17) lifetime against the Peacocks with nine runs scored, eight RBI and four triples. He also extends his current hit streak to five-straight games.

Matt Hand also had a landmark day as he finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, while setting career-highs with two runs scored and three RBI.

Two Mountain Hawks continued their heat streaks at the plate on Wednesday. Bleming extend his hit streak to seven games as he his hitting .423 (11-for-26) during his streak. Tony Gallo is on a four-game hit streak with a hit in nine of his last 10 games as he is hitting .471 (16-for-34) during that stretch.

Winners of two-straight and five of their last seven, the Mountain Hawks turn their sights to Holy Cross. Lehigh will host its first Patriot League series of the season in a three-game set against the Crusaders beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday set to start at 12 p.m.
