BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team will return to action at Wagner Saturday, looking to bounce back from a 18-12 defeat to No. 14 Princeton Tuesday. Opening draw is now set for 12 p.m. (was originally scheduled for 1 p.m.). On Tuesday, the Mountain Hawks stormed back from an early 8-0 deficit to pull within 13-10 and then 14-11, but the Tigers scored four of the final five goals for the 18-12 victory. Lehigh's only losses this season have come against nationally-ranked opponents, No. 12 Penn State and No. 14 Princeton.
The Tigers opened an 8-0 advantage just over 11 minutes into the game, also leading 11-3 with less than five minutes remaining in the first half. That's when Lehigh went on an impressive run, scoring seven of the next nine goals to pull within three with 16:22 still remaining. Junior Courtney Henig scored two straight goals, then assisted on sophomore Sondra Dickey's third goal of the game which pulled the Mountain Hawks within 13-10. The biggest story offensively was junior Olivia Kelly, who scored her first four career goals, including a natural hat trick (three straight goals) bridging the first and second halves to trim a 12-4 deficit down to 12-7.
Henig finished with six points (two goals, four assists), her third straight game with five or more points. She has at least three points in every game this season. Junior Kellie Gough also scored two goals. Graduate student Julianne D'Orazio enjoyed a strong game before leaving late in the second half due to injury. D'Orazio finished with a goal, five groundballs and a caused turnover.
The Mountain Hawks will hit the road for the second straight Saturday following a thrilling 13-12 last-second win at Columbia, a game which saw Dickey score the game-winner with just 12 seconds remaining.
Wagner is 1-2 on the season, falling to Iona (11-10) and Hofstra (15-10) before defeating Patriot League foe Bucknell (15-2). Erin Kerstetter leads the Seahawks in both goals (9) and points (9) while Lauren Ednie and (six goals) and Ally Alliegro (three goals, three assists) each own six points. Kerstetter and Maddi Courtney lead the way with seven groundballs apiece. Luc Darlington has seen the majority of time in goal, tallying a 10.00 goals against average and 0.459 save percentage, playing 120 of 180 minutes thus far.
Lehigh won the first-ever meeting between the two sides last season, 12-9. Among the highlight performances in that game was current senior Kierstyn Voiro, who recorded a career-high six caused turnovers to go with a goal, assist and two groundballs. The teams were originally slated to square off to start the 2014 season, but the game was postponed twice and never rescheduled.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wagner to face the Seahawks. Opening draw is now set for 12 p.m. (originally 1 p.m.).
