BOSTON – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored the first eight goals of the game, on its way to an 11-1 halftime advantage and impressive 15-8 win at Boston University on Saturday in the Patriot League opener for both sides. The win marked Lehigh's (6-3, 1-0 PL) fourth in a row and third straight in league openers. In the process, the Mountain Hawks handed the Terriers their largest-ever Patriot League (regular season) defeat.
Â
"It was a great first half for us," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Everything went well -execution wise, 50-50 balls, putting our shots away. Lots of people doing their jobs added up."
Â
In total, nine different Mountain Hawks scored a goal with five tallying multiple goals. Sophomore Sondra Dickey led the way with a career-high seven points via three goals and career-high four assists. Senior Haley Wentzel recorded a season-high four points (two goals, two assists) while juniors Courtney Henig and Mary Ellen Carron, along with freshman Julianne Puckette, each scored twice. Junior Kellie Gough recorded a goal and two assists.
Â
Senior Alexis King helped lead Lehigh's defense, which allowed just one goal over the game's first 36:50. King finished with a game-high five groundballs and team-high two caused turnovers. Junior Olivia Kelly scored a goal while adding five draw controls and two groundballs. Dickey added five draw controls and a groundball to go with her seven points.
Â
Lehigh jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind two goals from Puckette, Henig and Wentzel, along with single goals from Carron and senior Kierstyn Voiro. A Wentzel goal, assisted by Dickey, gave the Mountain Hawks an 8-0 advantage with 7:08 remaining in the first half.
Â
Lehigh's defense held the Terriers scoreless for the game's first 24:11 before they got on the scoreboard. The Mountain Hawks responded with the final three goals of the first half to take an 11-1 halftime advantage. Carron and Dickey also began the second half with goals to extend the margin to 13-1.
Â
The Terriers scored five consecutive goals, the first with 23:10 on the clock and the last with 11:19 remaining, but it wasn't nearly enough. Dickey and Gough rounded out the scoring for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks cruised to the 15-8 victory.
Â
"Offensively, having nine people contribute goals is an exciting statistic for us, to have that much balanced scoring," said Redfern. "In the first half, Kayleen Kelly was on Boston University's Kailey Conry (who entered the game with a team-high 25 points in five games). Kayleen had a really great half against her; to shut her out in that half was meaningful for our defense."
Â
Final shots were even at 28 while draw controls were even at 11. Lehigh held a 20-16 edge in groundballs. Freshman Samantha Sagi finished with eight saves across a pair of Boston University goalkeepers, who combined for four.
Â
"This was a key win for us, pivotal to give us confidence and give us a win in our pockets going into the next few games," said Redfern. "This was an important one."
Â
The Mountain Hawks are set to return to action next Saturday when they host Loyola at 12 p.m.
