STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Junior Clare Severe broke the Lehigh school record in the mile on Saturday, highlighting a day where Lehigh earned three individual wins, four runner-up finishes and four third place finishes across the Villanova Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Track and the DeSchriver Invitational at East Stroudsburg. Kaitlyn Toman and Madisyn Hawkins finished one-two in the pole vault at Nova, while junior Armani Comick and freshman Kara Bonner each grabbed their first collegiate wins at DeSchriver.

Severe's school record mark of 4:51.75 broke the school record of 4:53.32 by 1.57 seconds, which was previously set by teammate Maura Henderson last season. Ashleigh Crawford placed 11th in the mile, also setting a new PR (4:57.12).

"She had great workouts this week," said head coach Matt Utesch. "She got in a great race, came around the final turn and had a big smile on her face. It was great to see and I think she surprised herself."

The sprint/mid-distance group had a strong day for Lehigh with juniors Stephanie Hayes and Diana Hammerstone taking second and third places in the 3,000m run. Hayes' time of 10:00.05 was over nine seconds faster than her previous PR and Hammerstone's 10:03.70 finish was a new PR by over 23 seconds. In the 800m, Mary Casey (2:16.18) had a podium finish in third place, with Sophie Antonioli (2:17.26) and Jenn Mickens (2:17.74) joining her in the top 10.

In the sprints, Liyala Dickens finished in the top half of the 200m dash (26.15). Over in the 400m dash, two Mountain Hawks finished in the top 10 with Brooke Schaeffer (58.52) finishing eighth and Morgan McConnell (59.15) setting a new personal record in 10th.

Over in the field events, Toman and Hawkins both cleared 3.70m in the high jump. Toman took home first place, with Hawkins taking second based on misses. The mark is a new PR for Hawkins and just shy of Toman's school record.

"Both of them have 13 feet in them indoors if they can get in the right groove in the meet," Utesch said. "They both jumped very high and left some bars up there they maybe should not have."

In the high jump, Jordan Otto placed second by clearing 1.65m.

The team's success in the mile carried over to the DeSchriver Invitational as well, where Lehigh took three of the top four places in the event, including the winning and runner-up spots. Freshman Kara Bonner (5:19.39) won the mile with a new collegiate PR and Miranda Royds took second in 5:20.50. Sophomore Sydney Brannon finished fourth with a new PR (5:26.54), senior Jennifer Burke (5:36.29) finished ninth, and Giavanna Tabbachino came in 12th out of 37.

Also at ESU, Kaja Skerlj placed seventh overall in the field of 50 runners in the 400m (1:02.21) and teammate Rachel Okun was close behind in 12th place (1:03.16). Over in the 1,000m, Tyler Scanlin placed fourth in 3:06.99.

Lehigh also picked up a win in the field events from Armani Comick, who set two PRs on the day, including a huge PR to win the triple jump at 11.12m. Comick also landed on the podium in third place with a PR of 5.15m in the long jump. Sophomore Cate Shippee rounded out the top five in the long jump by tying her PR at 5.15m, and placed 10th in the triple jump.

"It's very exciting for both of them," Utesch said. "Armani put it all together and she's finally just starting to figure those events out. With Kara, your first collegiate win as always exciting. Miranda and her worked off each other and led the whole way, but both of them can run substantially faster as well."

Lehigh will compete in its final meet of the regular season next Friday (Feb. 9) at the Bucknell Tune-Up. It will serve as the final go-around before the Patriot League Championships Feb. 17-18.
