No. 6 Lehigh opens dual season with tough test Friday at No. 5 Michigan

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 6 Lehigh hits the road to open its dual season with a tough test against No. 5 Michigan Friday at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Mountain Hawks opened their season last weekend with 18 wrestlers competing at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in Troy, N.Y. Five wrestlers went 3-0 to win their respective pools, including sophomores Nick Farro (125) and Jordan Wood (285) and junior Jordan Kutler (174), who won Hammer Awards for winning A-flight pools. Lehigh went 12-3 in duals season ago, which was highlighted by a 27-8 win over Michigan at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall last November.

Michigan opened its season with a 20-point win at in-state foe Central Michigan. The Wolverines tied for fourth at last year's NCAA Championships and are the first of seven current top 10-ranked teams Lehigh will face in duals this season.

After kicking off its 110th season of wrestling last weekend, Lehigh opens its dual season at Michigan. The Mountain Hawks are 8-2 in dual meet openers under Pat Santoro with losses in 2011 to Pittsburgh and 2013 to Bucknell. Lehigh is 1-2 in season openers against Michigan (won in 1977-78, lost in 1991-92 and 2002-03). The 2002-03 opener versus the Wolverines was the last dual in the original Grace Hall.

Lehigh will likely have three wrestlers making their Mountain Hawk dual debuts against Michigan. Sophomore Brandon Paetzell could make his first Lehigh dual appearance at 133 after going 6-5 for Rutgers in duals in 2016-17. At 141, junior Ryan Pomrinca or freshman Dan Moran could make their first dual appearance, while freshman Jimmy Hoffman could make his dual debut at 149. Paetzell and Hoffman made their first official appearances for the Mountain Hawks at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic.

Eighteen Lehigh wrestlers competed at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Nov. 11 in Troy, N.Y., an event which served as Lehigh's season-opening competition.  The Mountain Hawks enjoyed a strong showing in the modified round-robin tournament format, with five Mountain Hawks posting 3-0 records to win their respective pools. Overall Lehigh went 33-19 on the day. The five wrestlers who went 3-0 on the day were sophomore Nick Farro (125), junior Jordan Kutler (174), junior Andrew Price (184), sophomore Jake Jakobsen (197) and sophomore Jordan Wood (285). Sophomore Brandon Paetzell upset eighth-ranked and returning All-American Montorie Bridges of Wyoming on the way to a second place finish at 133A.

If Lehigh can beat No. 5 Michigan it would mark the Mountain Hawks' fourth win over a top-5 team in 10-plus seasons under Pat Santoro. Last year's win over the fourth-ranked Wolverines was Lehigh's third over a top-5 opponent under Santoro.  The Mountain Hawks also topped No. 1 Cornell in 2010-11 and No. 3 Ohio State in 2014-15.

Michigan opens its home schedule Friday night when Lehigh visits Crisler Center. The Wolverines won seven bouts, scoring bonus points in five, in a 32-12 win at Central Michigan on Sunday. Michigan returns a wealth of talent from last year's team which collected a trophy at the NCAA Championships by tying for fourth place. Seven Wolverines appear in the latest InterMat rankings, including a quartet of top five-ranked wrestlers. NCAA finalist Stevan Micic is ranked No. 2 at 133, but for the third straight year the anticipated bout between he and Scott Parker will not happen in a dual. Senior Alec Pantaleo (157) and juniors Logan Massa (165) and Myles Amine (174) are ranked in the top five at their respective weights. Michigan alumnus Sean Bormet is in his first season as head coach, taking over for Joe McFarland after seven seasons as an assistant on the Wolverine staff, including the last four as associate head coach.

Lehigh and Michigan meet for the 41st time with the Wolverines holding a 25-15 edge in the series. Lehigh and Michigan had met in 34 straight seasons from 1977-78 through 2010-11 before the series resumed in January 2017. The Mountain Hawks are 4-2 against the Wolverines under Pat Santoro, with last year's win at Grace Hall snapping a two-dual Michigan winning streak.

Of the 20 wrestlers that participated in last year's dual between Lehigh and Michigan, just three have exhausted their eligibility. There are only three projected rematches from last year's dual with the featured bout expected to match No. 7 Jordan Kutler against No. 3 Myles Amine in a battle of returning All-Americans at 174. Kutler won a 5-4 decision over Amine in last year's dual, but the Wolverine picked up a 3-2 win in the NCAA quarterfinals on the way to a third place finish. Kutler finished sixth. Amine is now a two-time All-American who avenged dual losses to Lehigh wrestlers at the NCAA Tournament to earn All-America honors in both years. The other two projected rematches from last year's dual are at 165, where Logan Massa got Michigan on the board with a technical fall win over Cole Walter and 197, where Lehigh's Jake Jakobsen edged Jackson Striggow 2-0.

Friday's match is set for a 7 p.m. start from Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Streaming video will be available via BTN Plus on BTN2Go.com as well as on Flowrestling.org with a subscription required to watch. There will be no Lehigh radio or internet audio coverage for this dual.

Lehigh will be off for Thanksgiving weekend and will return to action on Friday, Nov. 30 when the Mountain Hawks welcome EIWA rival Princeton in their home opener, with match time set for 7 p.m. Two days after the Princeton dual, Lehigh takes to the road to battle top-ranked and three-time defending National Champion Penn State in the 107th meeting of Eastern wrestling's oldest rivalry. Last year, a Lehigh home dual record crowd of 9,896 saw the Nittany Lions edge the Mountain Hawks 23-19 at PPL Center in Allentown. Start time for the Penn State match is set for 1:30 p.m. from Rec Hall in University Park, Pa.
