Lehigh Looks To Continue Winning Streak - Hosts Villanova In Doubleheader At Stabler

11/15/2018 8:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, PA. - Lehigh is coming off a 63-48 win over the Hawks of Monmouth on Education Day to move to 3-0, a feat the Mountain Hawks haven't accomplished since the 2015-16 season. The Mountain Hawks once again saw points come from multiple avenues, with both junior Camryn Buhr and freshman Emma Grothaus dropping 14 points apiece while junior Gena Grundhoffer put up 11 points of her own. In each of their three wins, the Mountain Hawks have had three or more players record double figures in scoring.

Junior Hannah Hedstrom also made contributions in multiple areas of the score sheet, as she dropped six points along with eight rebounds, five assists, and one block.

This is the fifth time in program history that Lehigh has started the season 3-0. The other four seasons were 1984-85, 1995-96, 2014-15, and 2015-16. It also marks the second time in program history that Lehigh has not only started 3-0 but has also defeated opponents by 10 or more points. The last this time happened was back in the 2014-15 season.

This is the fourth straight year that Lehigh and Villanova will face each other, with the Wildcats defeating Lehigh 62-42 last season at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa. Villanova is 1-0 to start its season, as the Wildcats defeated the Hartford Hawks 59-41 at the Finneran Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. Mary Gedaka led the Wildcats with 18 points and six rebounds against Hartford. Jannah Tucker led Villanova in minutes played with 34.

It'll be a busy night at Stabler Arena on Friday, as it'll be Knoebels Night at Lehigh Basketball. After the women play Villanova, the men will take on Princeton with tipoff scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

A lot is planned for Knoebels Night, on the eve of the 154th meeting between Lehigh and Lafayette in the most-played rivalry in college football history. Any fan who brings a canned food item (to be donated to Second Harvest) receives $3 admission. Fans can show their Lehigh-Lafayette football ticket for $1 admission. The first 600 fans will receive a $5 ticket book for Knoebels while there will be a photo booth with Clutch and Kozmo prior to both the women's and men's games. Additionally, the NCAA National Championship trophy will be on display in the lobby of Stabler.

All-TIME VS. VILLANOVA

The Wildcats have not been kind to the Mountain Hawks, winning nine of the 10 all-time meetings against Lehigh.

IF LEHIGH WINS

  • Will improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 at home.
  • Will be the first time Lehigh has defeated Villanova since 2009, where Lehigh won 80-65.
  • Will snap a seven-game losing streak against Villanova.

IF VILLANOVA WINS
  • Will move the Wildcats to 2-0 on the season,
  • Will be their eighth straight win against the Mountain Hawks.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS

Playing in just one game this year, Villanova will be looking to continue its winning streak after defeating Hartford 59-41 on November 7.

Against the Hawks, Marry Gedaka led the way for the Wildcats on an 18 point night that saw her go 7 of 10 from the field, 4 for 4 from the free throw line along with six rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes of work. Jannah Tucker led Villanova in minutes played with 34, she also recorded 12 points.

The Wildcats are coming off a strong season, seeing a 23-9 overall record and a 12-6 BIG EAST record.  Although losing to Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament 63-58, the Wildcats made the NCAA Tournament where they defeated South Dakota St. 81-74 in overtime before falling to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame 98-72.

The last time these two teams met was last year at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa., where the Wildcats defeated the Mountain Hawks 62-42.
