BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team fell for the first time this season after the Mountain lost to the Wildcats of Villanova 70-48, Friday on Knoebels Night at Lehigh Basketball.
The Mountain Hawks held their own, but a barrage of three-point shooting from the Wildcats was what helped Villanova gain the 22-point advantage. In total, Villanova converted on 33.3 percent of shots from beyond the arc, hitting 11-of-33 against Lehigh.
"When you play tough competition, some of your flaws are exposed," said head coach Sue Troyan after the game. "They scored 10 straight points to begin the first quarter, and I don't think we were ready to play. Once we settled in we looked a little better, but this is definitely a game where you can learn a lot from."
Junior Camryn Buhr was the leading scorer for the Mountain Hawks, scoring 13 points. Buhr has scored in double figures in every game this season with a season high of 14 against Monmouth on Education Day. Sophomore Mary Clougherty had a career night in scoring, putting up 11 points on the night, besting her previous high of seven at American on January 14 of last season. Clougherty was also the leader on rebounding as she set another career high with eight rebounds, eclipsing the four she recorded four against Kutztown this season.
The young freshmen continue to impress on the court this season. Clair Steele recorded five points, going 2-for-2 from the field and hitting a free throw. Megan Walker took advantage of her long-range shooting, going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc for six points on the night. Emma Grothaus was a force on the glass, picking up five boards to go along with four points.
The bench was another bright spot for the Mountain Hawks, outscoring Villanova's reserves 29-7. The 29 points put up by the bench is the second highest on the season behind the 38 Lehigh scored against Kutztown to open the season. Lehigh has also recorded 28 points from the bench twice this year, one coming at Central Connecticut and the other against Monmouth on Education Day.

Even while going up against a BIG EAST team that was tested in the NCAA Tournament last season that saw the Wildcats pick up a win over South Dakota State, Lehigh finished strong as it recorded 21 points in the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was also the lone quarter that the Mountain Hawks outscored the Wildcats.
The Mountain Hawks came out slow, allowing the first 10 points to go the way of the visitors. A jumper from Clougherty would break up the Wildcat charge. Of their five made baskets from the field, Villanova hit three-three point shots in the first frame of action.
Lehigh would make adjustments in the second quarter, seeing Clougherty drop eight of the Mountain Hawks 13 points in the quarter. Walker would also get hot, hitting two three-point shots in the quarter. but Villanova took a 32-18 lead into halftime.
The third quarter would go Villanova's way as the Wildcats outscored Lehigh 19-9 before Lehigh would go on a fourth quarter run, scoring close to half of its total points in the final frame.
The Mountain Hawks will go on the road for the second to last time, as they venture to Vestal, N.Y. to take on the Bearcats of Binghamton University of the American East Conference on November 21 for a 1 p.m. tip off.
