BETHLEHEM, PA. – The Lehigh women's tennis team hosted Army West Point, Lafayette, and NJIT for the Lehigh Invitational this weekend.
The Mountain Hawks first played Army in singles, with the two teams evenly matched. Of the seven matches played, Lehigh won three with the other four going to the Black Knights. All three Mountain Hawks won in two sets, with Paula Gonzalez winning 6-4, 6-2, Sibel Can winning 6-4, 7-6(2) and Grace Lin winning 6-3,6-1.
Day one also saw Lehigh face Lafayette in doubles play, with Lehigh controlling the Leopards and winning all four matches. The paring of Can and Gonzalez rolled on to an 8-2 win with Leigh Friedman and Elizabeth Nowak also winning 8-2. Casey Zhong and Lin won 8-2 and Anshika Singh and Catherine Meghan kept the trend going with another 8-2 victory.
NJIT, however, would not go down as easily as the Leopards, as the Highlanders were able to sweep the Mountain Hawks in doubles on day one.
Day two featured another round with the Black Knights, as the Mountain Hawks were able to get the better of Army and win three of four doubles matches. Can and Gonzalez started with a 6-4 win with Friedman and Nowak keeping things going with a close win of 7-6(5). Singh and Meighan won 6-4 for the last win against Army.
In singles play against Lafayette, it was once again a show of force from the Mountain Hawks, swooping down and capturing every match. Gonzalez won in two sets 6-2,6-2, Can took a two-set win of 6-0, 6-2 with Nowak winning 6-1 in both sets. Zhong was taken to three sets after she dropped the first set 3-6, after which she rallied back to win 7-5 and 10-5 in the next two sets. Lin won 6-3, 6-2 for a two-set victory and Meaghan won in two sets, winning 6-3, 6-2.
In singles play against NJIT, Lehigh was able to gain the high ground, as the Mountain Hawks took three of five matches against the Highlanders. Can won 8-3, Nowak took an 8-5 victory while Lin came away with an 8-2 victory.
"I thought we competed very well this weekend against some strong teams. The hidden dual match format made for a very exciting and competitive weekend. I felt like we ended the fall season on a very high note and we know exactly what we need to focus on going into the off season," said head coach Sarah Hendrix.
The ITA Regionals start next week in New Haven, Conn. On the campus of Yale University, as Lehigh will send Sibel Can and Paula Gonzalez to compete.
