PRINCETON, N.J. – Competing in their final tournament before the ITA Regionals, the Lehigh men's tennis team battled in the Farnsworth Invitational at Princeton this weekend where they went up against the likes of William and Mary, Drexel, Middlebury, Delaware, and Army West Point.
Day one was not kind to the Mountain Hawks, who earned just three victories all day. Facing Drexel, William & Mary, and Delaware on the first day, the pairing of Zack Elliot and Gary Fishkin picked up two of those three wins in doubles, as they beat Daniel Pellerito and Sebastian Quiros of William & Mary 8-7(2) along with Milo Nagle and Luis Marcano of Delaware 8-3. In singles play, Jacob Edelchik defeated Gustav Wogen of Drexel in two sets 6-4, 6-1.
The second day of the invitational saw Elliot and Fiskin earned another doubles win, this time against Grant Patterson and Will Ockerman of Army West Point 8-3. Singles play saw a resurgence of strength from the Mountain Hawks. Edelchik won another match, this time against Andre Xiao of Middlebury in two sets 6-2, 6-3. Elliott picked up a pair of wins, as he defeated Milo Nagle of Delaware in two sets 6-2, 7-5 and Grant Patterson of Army in two sets 6-4, 6-2. Another Mountain Hawk to pick up multiple wins on the day was Fishkin, who displaced Will Ockerman of Army in a clean sweep, winning 6-0 in both sets along with a two-set victory of Luis Marcano from Delaware 6-1,6-1. Harry Wang defeated Xandy Hammit of Drexel three sets, which saw him lose the first 4-6 before coming back to win the next two 6-2 and 10-5.
"Playing William and Mary was a good learning experience on day one as they humbled us in singles. We ultimately want to achieve the level of discipline, fitness, and consistency they demonstrated," said head coach Wouter Hendrix. "First-year student-athletes Zack Elliott and Gary Fishkin had a good run in doubles, while veterans Jacob Edelchik and Bryant Born played high-level singles, illustrating the depth of our lineup.
The ITA Regionals will begin next Thursday, October 11 in Princeton, N.J. as Wang, Elliot, Jack Martin-Dyer, Edelchick, and Fishkin have all been invited.
