Lehigh women dominate Rider, improve to 3-1 overall

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh women's swimming and diving is in as good of a place as you would think right now, victorious in three of the first four meets, leaving Saturday at home with a 3-1 record. The Mountain Hawks defeated Rider 177-109 in what was yet another dominant win to establish confidence for the rest of the season.
 
Right off the bat, the women started the meet with a win in the 200 yard medley relay, highlighted by a first place finish for the A-team of Anna Francisco, Malia Wolf, Liz Olszewski and Payton Miles, finishing at 1:48.80 for the event. Just behind them in second was Lehigh's B-team of Nicole Shek, Anna Thomas, Olivia Giampietro and Ann Foley at 1:48.95.
 
Tori Connolly won the 1000 yard freestyle event at 10:43.88, beating out fellow Mountain Hawk Annie Norris who finished at 10:47.32. It was Miles who beat out Connolly in the 200 yard freestyle event with a winning time of 1:56.10 to claim the win.
 
Francisco was victorious in the 100 yard backstroke event with a 58:33, finishing over Shek who swam to a time of 59.42, good enough for second place.
 
Allison Morel was victorious in the 100 yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:09.04. Sarah Horne won the 200 yard butterfly event with a winning time of 2:07.63.
 
The Mountain Hawks' first 1-2-3 finish of the meet came in the 50 yard freestyle with Foley, Miles and Grace Rogowski also finishing with sub-25 second times. Foley, however, was the fastest and came out the victor with a quick 24.05 for the win.
 
In the 200 yard breaststroke, Olszewski was victorious with a time of 2:26.30, beating out Anna Thomas at 2:27.07. Giampietro won the 100 yard butterfly event with a time of 58.61, as Wolf finished second at 59.16.
 
Courtney Ferreira won the 200 yard IM event with her winning time of 2:11.30. Shek came in third with a time of 2:14.87. Finally on the swimming side of the meet, the A-team of Foley, Rogowski, Evie Gieseman and Ferreira won the 400 yard freestyle relay event with a time of 3:37.14. The B-team of Giampietro, Horne, Francisco and Thomas came in second place at 3:38.87.
 
As for diving, Megan Fennell dominated her event once again with a one-meter diving win of 252.82 and finished in third place in the three-meter dive with a score of 240.90.
 
"We really stayed tough in our second straight day of competition," said head coach Rob Herb. "Our women pushed through the pain to finish strong in every race today.
 
"I'm just so proud of this group and their positive energy for each other. In long weekends like this, it is crucial for the team to support each other. Their cheering was great, pep talks were great, this was a true team win."
 
According to Herb, Liz Olszewski, Samantha Gallego, Sarah Horne, Kate Bergin, Tori Connolly, Anna Francisco, and Allison Morel were the women of the meet against Rider.
 
"We are grateful and now even hungrier for more after this victory," said Herb.
 
Lehigh's women's swimming and diving team now head to Loyola on Saturday, Oct. 27 for a Patriot League meet in Baltimore at 1 p.m.
