BETHLEHEM, Pa. — A split against Boston University and Northeastern just two weeks ago was a good place to start for the Lehigh women's swimming and diving team, as the momentum carried over to the home opener, a dominant but close 128-115 over West Chester at Jacobs Pool Friday night.
Â
Courtney Ferreira got the winning started for the Lehigh women in the fifth event of the night, getting the victory in the 200 yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:53.09, while teammate Ann Foley finished second with a 1:53.35.
Â
Payton Miles won the 50 yard freestyle event with her time of 23.64. Evie Gieseman rounded out the podium with a third place finish at 24.57. Miles also dominated in the 100 yard freestyle, getting the victory with a time of 51.87. It was also the Lehigh women's first 1-2-3 sweep of the meet, as Foley swam to a time of 52.07 and Olivia Giampietro finished at 54.11.
Â
The very next event also finished with a 1-2-3 order for the Mountain Hawks with Anna Francisco claiming the 200 yard backstroke crown with a winning time of 2:07.17, just barely beating out Nicole Shek at 2:07.78, while Kate Bergin finished third with a 2:08.21.
Â
Finally on the swimming side, it was the A-team of Foley, Ferreira, Gieseman and Miles who once again defeated the opposition with a 200 yard freestyle relay victory of 1:36.37, while the B-team of Giampietro, Sarah Horne, Grace Rogowski and Sydney Dougherty took home third place at 1:38.96.
Â
Defending Patriot League Champion Megan Fennell won the one meter diving event with a final score of 252.25. Rayna Smilowitz came in third with a score of 221.10. Fennell placed second in the three meter dive with a final score of 234.52.
Â
For the entire meet, the Mountain Hawks had six first place finishes, including a lot of second and third place finishes which proved to be the difference maker in Lehigh getting its first win over West Chester since the 2016-17 season.
Â
"Our female swimmers of this meet were Courtney Ferreira, Payton Miles, Anna Francisco, and Megan Fennell," said head coach Rob Herb. "We really brought the heat tonight and the waters boiled as the team earned their victory. This is great motivation to keep the momentum going into tomorrow."
