BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team will kick off its 2017-18 season on Saturday when it hosts the Lehigh Invitational at Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, Pa. Temple, Saint Joseph's, Cabrini and Villanova will all be competing in the first fall race of the season. Saturday's competition will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Â
So far, the Mountain Hawks are in a good position this fall as they feature a strong mix of returning athletes, along with talented and eager freshmen.
Â
"We are in a much better place this year technically as we're seeing the athletes really trying to make changes early on," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We need to build our confidence and fitness, but that will come with time and a lot of strokes."Â
Â
Lehigh is coming off a 2016-17 season which saw it post its best finish in the Patriot League Championships. The Mountain Hawks developed a strong core for success, and the returning athletes are leading the way.
"The leadership has done a great job of welcoming all the first-years and novices," said Conley. "They are filling holes we have on the team and pushing some of the veterans already, which is great to see."
Â
Early in the fall season, Conley is looking for competition from his team. Saturday is an opportunity to get better as a unit.
Â
"I just want to see who is willing to compete," said Conley. "Competing at this time of year is really about who is willing to put in a full, complete effort every stroke. Fall is really about learning. Learning the rowing stroke, fitness, body awareness, how to race and discovering the level of our competition."
Â
The Mountain Hawks are excited to begin their season at home. Saturday's race is longer than the typical spring race, covering approximately 4,000 meters.
Â
"We've never done this race before and having something so early is great because we want to get everyone a taste of racing," said Conley.
Â
Following Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, Oct. 14 when they compete in Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
