Meet Schedule | Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team is set to clash with rival Lafayette on Saturday in the team's annual dual meet at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex in Easton. Lehigh's women are 8-17 since 1990 in outdoor duals against the Leopards, but have had the upper hand in recent years, winning four of the last six outdoor duals between the two schools. Along with the Lehigh men's team, the Mountain Hawks will be looking to grab the first men's and women's sweep of the Leopards (indoor and outdoor) since the 2011-12 season.
"It's always a big rivalry," said head coach Matt Utesch. "The thing you can expect is a great track meet. Lafayette always brings everything they have and certainly, we do. It's always a dog fight and that's what makes it great."
At last year's outdoor dual meet, the Mountain Hawks used 11 individual wins, including wins in seven of eight field events to take home a 117-85 victory. This season, the Mountain Hawks captured their second straight indoor title against Lafayette with a 114-66 win at Rauch Fieldhouse.
Lehigh enters this weekend coming off eight individual wins last weekend at the Muhlenberg Spring Invitational, where LU placed 20 competitors on the podium at the unscored meet. Lehigh previously competed at Lafayette two weeks ago, winning the Lafayette 7-Way behind 12 wins and 13 runner-up finishes. Sophomore Maura Henderson also broke the school record at the Raleigh Relays that weekend, which currently ranks as the fastest time in the Patriot League and 26th in the NCAA East Region.
"We match up really well against Lafayette and I think what you'll see is every event group, both the men and women are going to do really well," Utesch said. "I think in the sprints we're going to do very well, and we have a great group of kids in the sprint/middle distance group for both men and women.
"As we move into the longer distances, we've done really well in cross country and scored a lot of points indoors," Utesch said. "And we pick up the steeplechase this year which we've traditionally been great at. In the field events, Lafayette has a couple of good kids in different areas, but I like our chances."
Saturday's dual meet will begin with the field events at 11:30 a.m. The track events will get underway at 12:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100 meter run, followed at 12:35 p.m. by the men's 4x100m. The final women's event of the meet will be the 4x400 meter relay, tentatively slated for 3:25 p.m. Live results will not be available for the meet.
