36-hole results

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Playing in optimal scoring conditions, the Lehigh men's golf team broke 300 in both of its rounds on the opening day of the Patriot League Championship Saturday at the Bucknell Golf Club. While the Mountain Hawks' 36-hole total of 19 over par 579 was solid, six other teams bested the brown and white on day one, leaving Lehigh seventh out of eight teams in the field.

The Mountain Hawks shot 293 in the morning and 286 in the afternoon on the 6,224-yard, par-70 course. Lehigh will enter the final round trailing fifth place Navy and Lafayette by seven strokes. Defending champion Army West Point and Loyola are tied for first at six under par 554, with the Black Knights shooting 275 in the opening round and the Greyhounds answering with a 274 Saturday afternoon.

Individually, freshman Ryan Kelly and sophomore Billy Johns lead Lehigh at three over par 143. Kelly opened with a 74, highlighted by an eagle on the ninth hole, and then fired four birdies in the afternoon to shoot 69, the best round of the day for the Mountain Hawks. Hsu carded two birdies in each of his rounds to shoot 72 and then 71. Both players are tied for 15th place but are just one stroke out of ninth and potential All-Patriot League status.

Freshman Owen Quinn led Lehigh in round one with a 71, including five birdies, but a second round 76 has him in 30th place at 147.

Junior Billy Johns and sophomore Eamon Marone are tied for 34th place at 149. Both players shot 76 in the morning and 73 in the afternoon.

Rounding out Lehigh's six-player lineup is sophomore Lee Hammerschmidt, who sits in 46th place at 156 (80-76).

Army's Peter Kim holds the 36-hole individual lead at nine under par 131, highlighted by a championship record 63 in the second round Saturday afternoon. Kim leads Bucknell's JP Raftery by four strokes. The top five players individually are all under par.

The Patriot League Championship concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes from the Bucknell Golf Club. Lehigh will be playing with Holy Cross on Sunday, with pairings going off the first tee beginning at 8 a.m.
