BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team is set to compete in the Patriot League Championship, which begins Saturday at the Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa. The 54-hole championship will feature 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday with first tee times both days set for 8 a.m.

The Bucknell golf course is a shorter, narrow course that plays at 6,253 yards to a par 70.

Lehigh is one of eight teams that will be vying for the Patriot League's automatic bid to the regional round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The individual champion will also earn a bid to NCAAs if he is not a member of the championship team.

The Patriot League championship features a play six, score four format. The individual champion will be named the Patriot League Golfer of the Year, while the highest finishing freshman receives the sport's Rookie of the Year honor. Head coaches from all eight schools will vote on the Patriot League Coach of the Year award.

There will also be a 10-member All-Patriot League Team based on finish at the championship. The top five finishers (including ties) make the first-team squad, and all remaining finishers up to 10th place (including ties) qualify for the second-team.

Lehigh will be paired with rival Lafayette for the first day of competition. The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will tee off from the 11th hole Saturday, beginning at 8:54 a.m. Second round tee times for Lehigh and Lafayette will begin at 1:24 p.m. off the first tee.

Lehigh's six-player entry includes junior Billy Johns, sophomores Lee Hammerschmidt, Johnny Hsu and Eamon Marone, and freshmen Ryan Kelly and Owen Quinn.

The Mountain Hawks defeated Lafayette 377-388 in a head-to-head matchup Wednesday at Saucon Valley Country Club. Johns led the way for Lehigh, posting a round of 73, the lowest score for either team. Six of Lehigh's seven other golfers were under 80 as well, as freshman Joe Ender, Marone, Hammerschmidt and Kelly each shooting 76.

Lehigh's spring campaign has been highlighted by a team title at the 19-team Wildcat Invitational in late March. Hsu tied for medalist honors at that tournament at 139, which included a final round 67. Quinn also owns a tournament victory this season with his title at Binghamton's Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational. He also led Lehigh in its most recent full-field event, tying for seventh at La Salle's Finegan Invitational on April 10.

Lehigh has won three Patriot League championships in men's golf, taking crowns in 1996, 1997 and most recently, 2013, when the Mountain Hawks hosted at Saucon Valley Country Club. Two Mountain Hawks have claimed the individual title: current head coach Henry D'Alberto in 1996 and Bowen Osborn in 2001.

Last year the Mountain Hawks finished sixth in Annapolis, Md., with Hsu leading the way with a 13th place finish. Army West Point is the defending team champion.
