BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team saw seven of its boat race in the finals as the Mountain Hawks enjoyed a strong day at Saturday's 50th annual Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The seven finals appearances were the most Lehigh has ever had in the event. Four rowed in the grand finals and three in the petite finals, led by the Women's Varsity Eight and Men's Freshmen Eight who each rowed in their grand finals after finishing second in their heats.
Â
"I thought we had one of our best days of racing all year," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It was exciting to see our team race well against a high level of competition. The team stepped up in terms of a level of toughness we've been looking for. For example, we had people racing four times today when at no point did any of those people give up. Even within a race, we were able to hold our composure. Those are two examples of a high level of toughness we've been trying to develop."
Â
The Men's Freshmen Eight set the tone on Saturday by finishing in second place in its morning heat with a time of 6:18.17. Later, the Women's Varsity Eight also came in second with a time of 7:16.79.
Â
"Reaching the grand finals at this event and this level is a pretty good indication that we're headed in the right direction," said Conley. "The Women's Varsity Eight really stepped up; they had a challenging race in the heat, but were able to walk away in second place and make the grand final. The Men's Freshmen Eight came right off the line and it wasn't even a question as to whether or not they were going to make the grand final. Both of those boats really set a tone today, which was awesome."
Â
Also highlighting Saturday's results was the Women's Second Varsity Eight, which after placing fourth in its heat (7:16.02), won the petite final with a time of 7:30.91.
Â
"Overall, from top to bottom, we did the job we wanted to do," said Conley. "It was great for the athletes to see their work come to fruition in terms of results."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend when they host Mercyhurst next Saturday (Apr. 22) at Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown.
