Mountain Hawks wrap up strong effort against Mercyhurst
4/22/2017 5:02:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
QUAKERTOWN, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team enjoyed success against perennial Division II power Mercyhurst on Saturday, which included several close races and a win for the Women's Varsity Eight by more than 10 seconds. The Men's Varsity Eight also came down to the wire with Mercyhurst winning by just 0.26 seconds.
Â
"Overall, we competed strongly and our effort has reinforced all the hard work we've put in," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Despite the results, we still feel as though we showed the level of speed that will allow us to compete where we want to compete at the end of the year."
Â
The Women's Varsity Eight won its race with a time of 6:45.16, ahead of Mercyhurst who came in 6:55.47. The Men's Varsity Eight finished a split second behind the Lakers, posting a time of 5:57.39 while Mercyhurst finished in 5:57.13.
Â
"The two Varsity Eight races were definitely by far our two best races of the day," said Conley. "On the men's side, they came back from being down significantly to almost pull off the victory whereas the women basically led from start to finish and increased their lead as it went down the course. Both of those boats, being the best of our team, really showed what we can do against a great competitor."
Â
Other crew saw Lehigh's Men's Second Varsity Eight finish in 6:18.65, the Women's Second Varsity Eight come in 7:03.88 and the Women's Varsity Four finish in 8:08.50.
Â
Lehigh's women's team will return to action next Saturday (Apr. 29) at Patriot League foe Holy Cross. The men are next in action in the Dad Vail Regatta, which begins on Friday, May 12 in Philadelphia.
Â
"This race should give us some confidence going into Holy Cross and Dad Vails," said Conley. "We'll see what we can do against a Patriot League contender and at such a prestigious regatta like Dad Vails."
