WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lehigh women's rowing team finished an impressive day at Patriot League foe Holy Cross on Saturday by sweeping the Crusaders in the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four. Each one of the boats won by six or more seconds.
Â
"We needed to be able to execute our race plan and all three boats did that amazingly well today," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The composure that all the crews held, even as Holy Cross tried to push them, was awesome and something we want to see heading into our championship racing."
Â
The Varsity Eight won its race with a time of 7:24.3, ahead of Holy Cross who came in at 7:32.4. The Second Varsity Eight won more by than six seconds (7:36.0 compared to 7:42.9) while the Varsity Four finished in 8:56.5, more than 13 seconds ahead of Holy Cross (9:08.7).
Â
"It was very much a collective effort today," said Conley. "The Second Varsity Eight has struggled many times holding their composure when a boat is next to them. Today, there was no doubt they kept their heads in the boat and did what they wanted to do. The Varsity Four stepped up as well. They had Lizzie Litt, who's normally a coxswain, actually row, because Jessica Rivera-Rincon is injured and Jess served as coxswain. Someone who doesn't row helped that boat win by 12 seconds."
Â
The performance gives the Mountain Hawks confidence heading into the Patriot League Championships on Friday, May 12 on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Â
"It was a top-to-bottom performance today," said Conley. "The margins that the team was able to achieve today has helped build their confidence. They know going into Patriots that it's going to be a competition."
