Mountain Hawks post best-ever finish at Patriot League Championship

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Lehigh women's rowing team put forth its best-ever effort in the Patriot League Championship on Saturday, posting a school-record 26 points and finishing tied for sixth place overall. Two Mountain Hawks' boats reached the grand final while a third dominated in its petite final, winning by more than 24 seconds. The 26 points on the day were eight more than any previous Patriot League Championship in school history.

"What I saw today was an amazing effort from the team," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I think we outperformed our goals and there's nothing more I could have asked of these women today. It was exciting to see each and every race as it came down the course."

The Varsity Eight set the tone by taking third in its heat, more than 11 seconds ahead of Holy Cross in fourth, to clinch a spot in the grand final. The Mountain Hawks went on to finish fifth in the grand final, which included finishing ahead of rival Bucknell.

Lehigh's Varsity Four placed third in its heat with a time of 8:57.631, comfortably reaching the grand final, nearly one minute ahead of Colgate in fourth. The Mountain Hawks then placed fifth overall with a time of 9:06.733, finishing ahead of MIT in sixth (9:11.549).

"Our goal all year was to always try to raise the standards, which is what we did today," said Conley. "Once we got into the grand finals, it was anybody's game. These ladies really stepped up today to even take down a couple extra teams this year. Now, there's a new standard. We'll need to keep raising the bar and see what happens next year."

The Second Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:49.134 in its heat, which just missed a grand final berth, but the crew went on to dominate its petite final, posting a time of 7:54.624. The next team to come in was Colgate at 8:18.821.

"I've never been more proud of the work that somebody's put in like this team has," said Conley. "They've had their ups and downs all year. Getting into a grand final and overcoming more teams, that's part of the process. They've really bought into that process."
