NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehigh women's track and field team set two school records to highlight their pair of meets this weekend at the Armory Track Invitational and the Villanova Invitational. Sophomore Maura Henderson collected her third indoor school record, this time in the 5,000m run, and sophomore Kaitlyn Toman broke her own school record in the pole vault for the second time in the last three meets. Lehigh also had strong showing from many others, including a win for senior Courtney Avery in the high jump, and senior Katie Hatler qualifying for the semifinals in the 60m hurdles. As a team, the Mountain Hawks finished 17th out of 31 teams at the Armory Invitational, while the Nova Invite was unscored.
"A big weekend for Lehigh track and field," said head coach Matt Utesch. "Things are really coming together as we near the Patriot League Championships. Not only did we set three school records (including one men's program record), we had a number of personal records as well. It's my favorite part of the season because this is when the team starts to put on a show."
Henderson set a new school record for the second straight week, completing the 5K at the Armory Invite with a time of 16:52.59, good enough for a runner-up finish out of 20 competitors. The time was 2.97 seconds faster than Elizabeth Weiler's record from 2015 and marked the first time she has run the 5K on an indoor track. Her time currently ranks 47th in the nation this season and is first in the Patriot League by a wide margin of 22.88 seconds.
In other races at the Armory, senior Katie Hatler was Lehigh's top finisher in the prelims of the 60m dash (8.08). She also set a new PR (8.67) in the prelims of the 60 hurdles, qualifying her for the semis. She then finished the semifinals in 18th place overall with a time of 8.72.
Freshman Brooke Schaeffer led Lehigh in the 400m dash with a PR of 59.57, and Hanna Brosky turned in a season-best time of 1:17.12 to earn a seventh place finish (out of 24) in the 500m dash. Her teammate Rachel Okun (1:18.51) also ran the 500 and had a season-best time in 11th place.
In the mid-distance events, freshmen Jenn Mickens (23rd/2:19.11) and Mary Casey (26th/PR-2:19.81) led Lehigh runners in the 800 meter run. Clare Severe finished 16th out of 49 in the 1,000m run in 2:55.14, with Mickens not far behind in 21st (2:58.36).
Marissa Karl (5:07.59) leading the way in 13th place in the mile run, with Laura Barnes (5:09.25) in 16th, and Brenna Clark (5:11.25) in 18th.
Freshman Ashleigh Crawford (10:07.88) led the team with a 27th place finish in the 3K, with sophomore Stacie Nadel (10:27.57) in 39th place.
Over in Staten Island at the Nova Open at the Ocean Breeze Track Complex, Toman took sixth place in the pole vault by besting her own school record by one centimeter, clearing at 3.65 meters. It marks the second time in the last three weeks she has reset the school record, and her mark ranks tied for second in the Patriot League this season.
Courtney Avery set a season-high with her victory in the high jump, beating out the other 17 placers at 1.78m, which is also the highest jump in the Patriot League this season.
Senior Courtney Wu set a new PR with her sixth place triple jump (11.26m), and also led Lehigh in the long jump (5.08m).
Senior Amanda Youngblood rounded out the top 10 in the shot put at 12.19m and junior Paige Grossman had a personal record shot of 11.33m to finish 15th. The same duo represented Lehigh win the weight throw, where Youngblood took sixth place at 16.05m and Grossman took 10th (14.76m) to finish in the top half of the field.
