Women’s Track Earns Five Wins; Finishes Second at Bucknell Tune-Up

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team finished runner-up out of six teams on Friday at the Bucknell Tune-Up, their final meet in the lead up to next weekend's Patriot League Championships. The Mountain Hawks picked up five victories on the evening and five runner-up finishes to earn 171 team points, just eight behind first place Bucknell.
Laura Barnes (mile), Courtney Avery (high jump), Kaitlyn Toman (pole vault), Kiana Wright (triple jump) and Katie Hatler (60m hurdles) all registered wins on the day. Leah Ferguson (60m dash), Marissa Karl (1,000m), Jordan Otto (high jump), Tyler Bannister (long jump) and Courtney Wu (triple jump) all took home second place finishes.
Ferguson led Lehigh in both the 60 and 200 meter dashes, scoring points as the 60m runner-up and sixth place in the 200. Sophomore Noreen Byrne took fourth in the 400m dash, and Hanna Brosky (1:16.47) and Brooke Schaeffer (1:16.96) both hit ECAC qualifying times in the 500m, finishing third and fourth, respectively.
Freshmen Jenn Mickens (4th/2:18.98) and Mary Casey (5th/2:19.45) both rounded out the top five of the 800m run, and Karl's runner-up time of 2:54.74 in the 1,000m was an ECAC qualifier. The Mountain Hawks placed three runners in the top four of the mile run, with Barnes (5:03.89) crossing the line in first, Stephanie Hayes (5:10.48) finishing third and Brenna Clark (5:11.88) placing fourth to help Lehigh earn a combined 20 points.
Hatler hurdled her way to a new PR and an ECAC qualifying mark of 8.64, coming six hundredths of a second shy of the school record to earn 10 team points. Natalie Jacobs (9.01) also landed on the podium in third place.
The Mountain Hawks swept the top four spots in the high jump, with Avery leading way with a season-best of 1.79m, upping her hold on the Patriot League's highest jump of the season. Otto leapt 1.64 meters to take runner-up, followed by Bannister with a new PR (1.64m) in third and Brittany Le Jouan (1.59m) in fourth.
Toman won the vault for the second time this year at 3.60 meters, and Bannister made it two new personal records on the day with her runner-up long jump of 5.11 meters. Wright and Wu led the way in the triple jump, with Wright notching her first triple jump win of the year at 11.32m, finishing just ahead of Wu who leapt 11.13m.
Senior Sarah Cassidy also set a pair of new PRs on the day, one in the 60m hurdles, and the other with her fourth place shot put at 13.03m. Elsewhere in the throws, Michaela Bubak placed third in the weight throw at 15.64m, and teammate Paige Grossman (15.27m) finished fifth.
With all of the regular season meets in the rearview mirror, Lehigh will now focus on next weekend's league championships, which will be held Fri-Sun., Feb. 17-19 at Boston University. Check back to Lehighsports.com throughout the week for updates and coverage leading up to the championship meet.
