BOSTON, Mass. – Two more school records fell on Sunday for the Lehigh women's track and field team on the final day of the 2017 Patriot League Indoor Championships. Sophomore Maura Henderson set a new school record in the 3K, narrowly missing out on her second league title in as many days, and the distance medley relay (DMR) team of Marissa Karl, Rachel Okun, Clare Severe and Laura Barnes also set a new school record. The Mountain Hawks finished fourth overall at the championships with 110.33 points, finishing just two points behind first place Navy and nearly 70 behind first place champion, Bucknell.
Â
For the weekend, Lehigh had three individual champions – Sarah Cassidy (pentathlon), Courtney Avery (high jump), and Maura Henderson (5K) - all of whom landed on the All-Patriot League First Team. Senior Katie Hatler and Henderson also added runner-up performances this weekend to collect PL Second Team honors.
Â
One day removed from her school record and league championship performance in the 5K, Henderson returned on Sunday for the 3K and led for much of the race, before just being edged out by six hundredths of a second at the finish line by Bucknell's Christine Bendzinski. Both runners finished over 10 seconds under the previous Patriot League Championship meet record, and Henderson's time of 9:27.43 was good enough to shatter Elizabeth Weiler's school record of 9:45.18 from 2015.
Â
In the DMR, Karl, Okun, Severe and Barnes took to the track to defend Lehigh's league title from last year's meet. The quartet finished in 11:48.30, breaking the Lehigh school record that had been set by last year's championship winning team, in addition to finishing under the PL record time, but placed third overall behind Bucknell (11:42.17) and Navy.
Â
Hatler set a new PR of 8.63 seconds to take runner-up in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing five hundredths of a second behind the school record and one tenth of a second behind the winner, who set a new PL record.
Â
Sophomore Noreen Byrne set a new PR of 58.22 in 10th place of the 400m dash. Freshman Brooke Schaeffer scored two team points in seventh place of the 500m dash. In the 800m, freshman Mary Casey rounded out the scoring in eighth place with a new PR (2:14.57) and Sophie Antonioli set a new PR of 2:14.81 in ninth place.
Â
Lehigh earned another podium performance from Karl in the 1,000m with a third place showing of 2:54.46, just a couple steps ahead of Severe in fourth place (2:54.85). In the mile, Barnes finished fourth by cracking the sub-five minute mark for the first time in her collegiate career, setting a new PR in 4:59.09.
Â
Elsewhere in the relays, the 4x800 team scored two points in seventh place, crossing the line in 3:55.47.
Â
In the field events, senior Amanda Youngblood had a career day, setting a new PR of 13.80m to lock up a third place finish in the shot put, just nine centimeters shy of the school record. Courtney Wu set a personal-best in the triple jump at 11.42m to finish ninth overall, and sophomore Kaitlyn Toman scored points to lead Lehigh in 10th place of the pole vault (3.35m).
