BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team will head to upstate New York for a crucial late season matchup against Colgate on Wednesday evening. With just three games remaining in the regular season, the Mountain Hawks sit in ninth place in the Patriot league standings, just two games behind sixth place Colgate. The Mountain Hawks will play Colgate twice over the next week, while the two teams between them, Holy Cross and Loyola, will also play each other twice over the final three games.
Â
Colgate took the last matchup between the two last March, picking up an 82-72 win at Cotterell Court. Overall, Lehigh is 6-3 against the Raiders over the last four seasons and are 2-2 in their last four trips to Hamilton, N.Y. The teams have split their two regular season matchups in each of the last three seasons.
Â
Colgate is coming off a 76-62 home win on Saturday against Loyola, joining Lehigh in having split with the Greyhounds this season. Lehigh finished off a season sweep of Lafayette at Stabler Arena on Saturday, holding off the Leopards 69-60. Lehigh is now 4-4 over its last eight games, dating back to its first league win of the season at Lafayette on January 21. The Mountain Hawks are still mathematically alive for the sixth seed in the league and a first round bye, but they will need to win their three remaining games and require outside help from Loyola and Holy Cross.
Â
IF LEHIGH BEATS COLGATE
-Â Â Â Â Â Lehigh would pick up a win over Colgate for the 13th straight season.
-Â Â Â Â Â Lehigh would improve to 4-3 over its last seven games.
Â
ALL-TIME VS. COLGATE
Lehigh and Colgate will square off for the 63rd time on Wednesday night, with the Mountain Hawks holding a 6-4 record over the last 10 matchups. Over that span, Lehigh is 2-3 on the road at Cotterell Court and 4-1 at Stabler Arena. The two teams have split the series each of the last two years, and Colgate has not won the season series since taking two of three in the 2004-05 season.
Â
Lehigh won the first ever matchup between the two schools in 1986-87 by a score of 82-65. Colgate held a five game winning streak over Lehigh from 1993-1995, and the Mountain Hawks hold the longest winning streak in the series of 13 games from 2006-2012, the last of which was the only overtime game in the series history, where Lehigh prevailed 85-82 in 2OT.
Â
The two teams split last season's series, with each team winning on their home court. Lehigh won 83-74 at Stabler on Feb. 24 as four players scored in double figures, led by Lexi Martins and Quinci Mann with 19 points apiece. Bernadette Devaney added 12 points as LU shot 44.4 percent from the field.
Â
On March 2 in Hamilton, Martins and Taylor Campbell netted 18 points apiece in Lehigh's 10-point loss. Departed seniors Paige Kriftcher (27) and Josie Stockill (22) scored 20+ points for the Raiders.
Â
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
At 9-17 overall and 6-9 in Patriot League play, Colgate finds itself two games up on Lehigh in the Patriot League standings with three games left, and two of them against the Mountain Hawks.
Â
The Raiders rank fourth in the league in scoring at 65.5 ppg, one spot ahead of Lehigh (63.1 ppg). Both teams sit in a tie for seventh in the PL with a -5.5 scoring margin. Colgate also sits just ahead of Lehigh in second place in free throw percentage at 71.9 percent, and ranks second in the league by shooting 33.5 percent from three-point range.
Â
Colgate holds their opponents to just under 39 percent shooting, the fourth lowest in the league. The two teams are close in rebounding margin, with Colgate (-2.1) once again holding a slight edge over Lehigh's -2.7 margin.
Â
On the defensive side of things, Colgate has come up with 4.2 blocks per game, the best in the league and ranks eighth with 6.3 steals.
Â
The Raiders currently sit eighth in the PL with a -2.9 turnover margin, averaging 17.7 turnovers per game, but have improved their numbers of late, allowing no more than 12 turnovers in four of their last five games, including a season-low of 10 in Saturday's win over Loyola.
Â
Senior Katie Curtis leads the team and ranks ninth in the PL with 13.0 ppg and collects 4.2 rebounds and a team-high 2.85 assists per contest. Kateri Stone scores 11.5 ppg while sophomore Mylah Chandler leads the squad with 6.3 rebounds and has a team-leading 21 blocks.
Â
Freshman Rachel Thompson has had an immediate impact on the team this season, scoring nine points per game and shooting a team-best 46.8 percent from the field. Curtis (41 percent) and Stone (33.8 percent) are the team's biggest threats from the outside, along with Chelsea Koren who hits at a 33.3 percent rate from downtown.
Â
MAGIC FROM THE OUTSIDE
Saturday's win over Lafayette marked the first time this season that Lehigh won when shooting between 30 and 39 percent from three-point range. Lehigh is now 1-4 in such games this season, and is 4-12 when shooting under 30 percent from long range. Lehigh scored 18-straight points from beyond the arc in the first half and shot 57.1 percent from three-point range in the second quarter.
Â
The win also marked just the second victory of the year for Lehigh when allowing their opponent to shoot over 40 percent from the field (2-14).
Â
HOME COOKING
The Mountain Hawks boast a field goal percentage of 39.7 percent in 15 home games this season at Stabler Arena, but are shooting just 31.1 percent in their 11 road games. The trend is the same from three-point range, with the team shooting 35.8 percent at home (7.7 made 3FG/game), and 25.3 percent on the road (5.9 made 3FG/game).
Â
GRUNDHOFFER MAKING STRIDES
Freshman Gena Grundhoffer has been a force for the Mountain Hawks over the last five games, scoring 12.4 points per contest and shooting 46.7 percent from the field. She is also 5-for-9 from beyond the arc and is collecting 4.0 rebounds per game in the last five games. She had the first 20-point game of her career on Feb. 11 against Holy Cross.
Â
BUHR CONTINUES TO BLOOM
Over the last 10 games, freshman Camryn Buhr leads the Mountain Hawks with 5.6 rebounds and is third with 8.8 points per game. She is shooting 40.5 percent over that span, leads the team with nine steals, is tied for the most blocks with five, and is second with 12 assists. For the season, she has crept up to second on the team with 4.5 boards per game.
Â
GETTING A BOOST ON THE BOARDS
The Mountain Hawks have now outrebounded their opponents in six of their last nine games overall, and own a rebounding margin of +1.4 during that stretch. Lehigh had previously been outrebounded in nine straight contests.
Â
Lehigh ranks fourth in the Patriot League by collecting 37.5 rebounds per game, but comes in eighth/10 by allowing 40.2 boards per game. Overall, Lehigh's rebounding margin has been on the rise to -2.7 and is 7th in the PL. Lehigh has been outrebounded in 15 of its 26 games this season and holds a 2-13 record in those games.
Â
BERN BABY BERN!
Over the last nine games, junior Bernadette Devaney is shooting 50 percent (14-for-28) from three point-range and 41.5 percent overall (17-for-41). She currently ranks tied for third in the Patriot League in three-point percentage at 41.4 percent. In the two games against Navy and Lafayette on Jan. 18 and 21, she shot a sizzling 7-for-9 (77.8%) overall, including 7-for-8 (87.5%) from three point range. She averaged 11.5 points and two rebounds in 24.5 minutes over the two games.
Â
HEDSTROM'S HELPING HANDS
Over the last nine games, freshman point guard Hannah Hedstrom ranks second on the team with 5.4 rebounds and is dishing out four assists per game.
Â
Hedstrom is currently fourth in the Patriot League by averaging 3.5 assists per game, and is third during league games with 3.9 assists per game. She is the only freshman ranked in the top 10 overall and is tied for the most assists in one game this season: nine against Delaware State on Nov. 16.
Â
MANN REMAINS IN THE TOP 25
Junior Quinci Mann ranks 25th in the NCAA in free throw percentage at 86.6 percent, after climbing as high as No. 19 entering this past weekend. If the season were to end today, her percentage would be tied for 10th-best in Patriot League history since the league began keeping track of the stat during the 2000-01 season.
Mann set a new program record for made free throws in a game by going 16-for-16 from the line on Feb. 1 against Loyola, surpassing the previous Lehigh record of 13, held by Alexa Williams (2009) and Kelly Madden (1995). The mark was 10 shy of the Patriot League record of 26 (in 26 attempts) held by Army's Kelsey Minato (2014).
Â
Her 16 made free throws is the second most in a single game in the Patriot League this season, and tied for ninth most in a single game in the nation.
Â
ONE EXTREME TO ANOTHER
Lehigh had its worst shooting day of the season in last Wednesday's loss at Navy, shooting just 27.1 percent overall, and tied for the fewest made field goals this season (16). This followed their Feb. 11 win over Holy Cross, where Lehigh shot a season-best 52.1 percent from the field, the first time they shot over 50 percent from the floor since Feb. 20, 2016 at Lafayette.
Â
Lehigh shot an even 50 percent from three-point range in the game, marking the second highest percentage of the season and the fourth time they've made 10+ triples in a game this year.
Â
PATRIOT LEAGUE POINTS
Lehigh has seen a significant drop off in points scored since the start of Patriot League play. In their first 11 games of the season, Lehigh averaged 66.5 points per game and a -3.4 scoring margin, but has only 60.7 points and a -6.9 scoring margin in their 15 league games since. Lehigh ranks seventh in PPG in league games (60.7).
Â
THE MAGIC NUMBER IS 70
Lehigh holds a 6-1 record in games this year where they have scored at least 70 points, with the only setback coming to Army West Point. They are 3-16 when scoring under 70, including a 1-7 mark when scoring in the 50's. Lehigh is averaging 76.2 points in their wins and 56.2 in their losses.
Â
BIG POINTS AT THE CHARITY STRIPE
The 34 made free throws by the Mountain Hawks against Loyola was the most in the Patriot League this season (Army had 29 vs. Lafayette on 1/5/17), and just four shy of the league record of 38, set by Bucknell on Feb. 21, 1998.
Â
THE BIG QUARTER
Lehigh is the only team in the Patriot League to have allowed 30 points in a single quarter this season. This feat that has happened twice - the first quarter at Duquesne on Nov. 13 (30), and the fourth quarter against Boston University on Jan. 4 (37).
On the flip side, three Patriot League teams have scored 30 in a quarter this season: American (30) vs. UMBC, Army West Point (32) vs. Mercy, and Boston University (37) at Lehigh.
