BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team continues its four game road trip to open the season on Tuesday night at Monmouth at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back from a season-opening 107-73 loss at Minnesota on Saturday. Sophomore guard Hannah Hedstrom led the team with 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior Mae Williams had a career-high 11 points, while Quinci Mann and Cameryn Benz tallied 11 points apiece.
Freshman Mariah Sexe tallied seven points and three rebounds in her collegiate debut and Mary Clougherty chipped in three points, four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Camryn Buhr tied for the team-high with seven rebounds.
Lehigh outrebounded Minnesota 42-40 and shot 45.9 percent in the second half, but gave up a program single-game record for points thanks in part to Minnesota shooting 51.3 percent overall (41-for-80), 52 percent from three-point range (13-for-25) and forcing 23 Lehigh turnovers off 12 steals.
Tuesday's matchup marks the fourth year in a row Lehigh and Monmouth will face off, with just one of the last five meetings being played at Monmouth. Lehigh is 1-0 all-time in the OceanFirst Bank Center, winning 82-70 in 2014.
ALL-TIME VS. MONMOUTH
The Mountain Hawks and Hawks will meet up for the 11th time in
program history dating back to their first matchup on December 7,
1994, which Monmouth won by a score of 69-66.
Monmouth won the first three games of the series, including a 76-75
victory in the 1997-98. Each of the first three meetings were played
in the 1990s. The two teams spit the only two times they faced each other in the 2000s, with the home team winning each game.
Lehigh has faced Monmouth five times since the 2011-12 season, with the Mountain Hawks posting a 2-3 record. Last season, Monmouth ended LU's two-game winning streak in the series with an 11-point win in the Christmas City Classic. In 2015, Lehigh posted a 95-88 overtime win over Monmouth. Those 95 points are tied for the second-most
points scored in a single game in program history.
The Mountain Hawks are 1-3 when facing Monmouth on the road. Lehigh's only road win at Monmouth came in their last and only trip to OceanFirst Bank Center on Nov. 15, 2014 with an 82-70 win.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Monmouth returns 11 of their 13 players from a team that went 15-16 overall last year, including a 9-11 mark in MAAC play. Monmouth was voted fifth out of 11 teams in the MAAC preseason poll.
The Hawks return six sophomores who accounted for nearly 35 points and 20 rebounds per game last season. Sophomore guard Kayla Shaw was voted Preseason All-MAAC Third Team after setting a program record last season with 93 three-pointers. Shaw scored a team-high 22 points in the team's season opening win over Sacred Heart.
In her debut with the Hawks after transferring last year from Utah Valley University, Rhaiah Spooner-Knight scored 11 points and sophomore Alexa Middleton tallied eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.
In their season-opener against Sacred Heart, Monmouth used a strong fourth quarter and hit 11 of their 12 free throws in the period to win 69-64. The Hawks held a strong edge in bench points at 18-4.
Monmouth received big points from its bench throughout last season, including in their victory over Lehigh where they outscored the Mountain Hawk's bench 45-18. Shaw led the Hawks with 17 points and Kayla Quintana added 16.
