
Second Half Rally Not Enough as Lehigh Falls at Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. – A second half rally by the Lehigh women's basketball team came up short on Thursday evening in a 62-58 loss at Loyola (Md.). Three Mountain Hawks scored in double figures, led by junior Quinci Mann who had 16 points and a career-high six rebounds. Freshman Gena Grundhoffer added 14 points and six boards and was 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Freshman Hannah Hedstrom scored 10 points to go with two assists. Junior Taylor Campbell had six points and three rebounds, and freshman Cameryn Benz added five points, four rebounds and one assist. The result is Lehigh's sixth loss in a row and drops them to 5-9 (0-3 PL) on the season, while Loyola improves to 6-8 (2-1 PL).
For the game, Lehigh shot 36.2 percent (17-for-47) to Loyola's 33.9 percent (21-for-62). The Mountain Hawks also outscored Loyola 36-23 in the second half and turned the ball over on just four occasions after halftime. Loyola held a 41-36 edge in rebounding, including 17-9 on the offensive end.
Mann and Grundhoffer matched Loyola's buckets early, before the Greyhounds went on a 6-0 run, which ended with a Buhr free throw at 5:34 mark. Three pointers by Hedstrom and Campbell got Lehigh within 12-11 by the first media timeout, but Loyola surged coming out of the media for an 8-0 run to take a 20-11 lead. Camryn Buhr answered with a layup with 1:54 remaining to cut it to a seven-point game before Loyola put up four points in the final minute for a 24-13 lead after one quarter.
Williams opened the second quarter for Lehigh with a shot from long range, but that was a close as Lehigh would get as the Greyhouds got the lead up to 13 on a layup from Stephanie Karcz and opened up a 15-point lead off a three from Bri Betz-White with 1:45 to go. Overall, Loyola closed the half on an 11-3 run and carried a 39-22 lead into halftime.
The Mountain Hawks (38.1 percent) outshot Loyola (36.8 percent) through the opening 20 minutes, but the Greyhounds held advantages in rebounding (25-15), second chance points (15-5) and turnovers (11-3).
The Mountain Hawks came out of the locker room with a spark, sprinting to an 11-2 run over the first 3:15. Two free throws from both Hedstrom and Grundhoffer, plus a three from Mann got Lehigh within 10 points at the 7:24 mark. Lehigh then got within eight on a Mann jumper, and then again two minutes later when Grundhoffer hit two free throws to make it 43-35. Loyola knuckled down and held Lehigh to just one field goal over the final 6:45 of the quarter, which came from Cameryn Benz with 2:14 on the clock as they Greyhounds carried a 49-38 lead into the fourth.
The Mountain Hawks made another push in the final quarter, chipping away and eventually getting to within five points. Trailing 54-45 with 4:13 remaining, Mann hit the second of her two threes on the day, and Campbell capped a 9-0 Lehigh run with a free throw to make it a five-point game at 54-49 with 3:27 to go. Betz-White scored four straight for Loyola to get the lead back to nine, and the Mountain Hawks wouldn't get within five again until Hedstrom hit a pair from the charity stripe to make it 59-54 with 19 seconds remaining.
Following a Greyhound free throw, Mann was fouled while shooting a three with 12 seconds left, and promptly hit two of the free throws to get Lehigh within four. After LU was forced to foul with eight seconds remaining, Loyola hit two free throws to go up by six and ice the game away. Mann dropped in a layup as time expired, bringing the final to 62-58.
