Lehigh Suffers Tough 68-51 Setback at American

1/7/2017 7:13:00 PM | Women's Basketball

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Lehigh women's basketball team suffered another tough loss on the road Saturday afternoon with a 68-51 defeat at American. Freshman Gena Grundhoffer had a team-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, freshman Camryn Buhr registered career-highs with 10 points and nine rebounds, and junior Quinci Mann added 10 points and five rebounds. The Mountain Hawks (5-10, 0-4 PL) finished the game 21-for-63 shooting (33.3 percent), while American was 26-for-54 (48.1 percent). Both teams had 22 points in the paint and Lehigh held a 13-10 advantage on points in the paint. Emily Kinneston had a game high 20 points for American (6-9, 3-1 PL), and Cecily Carl had eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Lauren Crisler added nine points and eight rebounds for the Eagles.

"Defensively, I thought we left American a lot of opens shots in the first quarter, and we were real patient on the offensive end particularly in the first five minutes of the second quarter," said head coach Sue Troyan. "But ultimately I thought the biggest difference was taking good shots versus taking rushed and bad shots."

Mann and Buhr started the game with three-pointers and Grundhoffer added a three of her own at the 4:55 mark to give Lehigh a 15-13 lead. After falling behind 19-15, Hailey Pascoe drained back-to-back threes to put Lehigh up 21-19 with 2:45 left in the frame.

Lehigh started red hot from beyond the arch, shooting 5-for-8 from three-point land and 8-for-17 overall in the opening 10 minutes. The quarter saw five points each for Mann, Grundhoffer and Buhr, and six from Pascoe who had a pair of threes. American shot 60 percent (9-for-15) in the opening frame as the two teams went into the second quarter tied 21-21.

After a hot first quarter shooting the ball, Lehigh was held to just five points on 2-of-16 from the field in the second quarter. American began the quarter on a 9-0 run before Meagan Eripret hit a base line jumper with 3:40 to go to cut it to 30-23. Moments later, Eripret came up with a steal on the defensive end and finished on the offensive end with another jumper to make it 30-25. Buhr added a free throw on the next trip up the court as Lehigh trailed 33-26 at halftime.

"When we execute, run our stuff and take good shots we're pretty good, but then we try to do a lot of one-on-one stuff we aren't very good," Troyan said. "It's about trusting the offense and one another to make plays and I don't think we did a great job of that."

Six quick points for Grundhoffer to begin the second half got the Mountain Hawks to within one at 33-32. A Mann three-pointer at 6:10 got Lehigh to within one again at 36-35, and Grundhoffer and Buhr each had layups to answer American baskets over the next few minutes, but LU was unable to get any closer. The Eagles went on to score the last nine points of the quarter and take a 51-39 lead into the fourth.

Hannah Hedstrom cut it to 57-43 on the fastbreak with 7:32 remaining, and Lehigh would get to with a dozen points on two separate occasions with layups from Devaney (61-49) and Mann (63-51). American closed the game out with five unanswered over the final 55 seconds to finish off their sixth win of the year.

"We just have to keep plugging away, keep getting better and keep coming to work at practice every day," Troyan said. "It wasn't one of our better games tonight and give credit to American, I thought they defended really well. I thought we had a lack of discipline, particularly on the offensive end from our stand point, and didn't execute or take good shots."

Lehigh will return home for their next matchup on Wednesday night at Stabler Arena against in-state rival Bucknell. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the Patriot League Network and Lehighsports.com/watch.
