BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Former Lehigh men' soccer standout goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent has recently signed a professional contract with Galway United of the League of Ireland (LOI).
Nugent made a name for himself last season while playing for the Sligo Rovers, also of the LOI (the top professional league in Ireland). The Dedham, Mass. native was thrust into a starting role towards the end of the season for the Bit o' Red due to an injury to the club's starting net minder. Nugent made the most of his opportunity as he recorded six clean sheets in the final seven league games of the season for Sligo.
Now with Galway, the 25-year-old Nugent was brought in to compete for a starting job with newly-resigned Conor Winn. The 24-year-old Winn enters his fifth season with Galway and made 26 appearances with the club in 2016.

Nugent wrapped up his career in the brown and white after the 2014 season. He was a three-year starting goalkeeper for the Mountain Hawks and two-time All-Patriot League selection. Nugent was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, First Team All-Patriot League and Second Team All-Mid-Atlantic at the conclusion of his sophomore campaign in 2011 after finishing the season ranked third in the nation in save percentage (.896) and shutout percentage (0.61). He saw action in 16 games during his junior campaign in 2012 before being sidelined by an injury in 2013. Nugent was named one of the final 30 candidates for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award at the beginning of the 2014 season. He posted three shutouts during the season and was named Third Team All-Patriot League.
Prior to heading across the pond, Nugent spent time with the Harrisburg City Islanders, the United Soccer League affiliate of Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union. Nugent spent the 2015 season in Harrisburg before making the jump to the LOI and signing with the Sligo Rovers.
