2016 Schedule
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Dean Koski has announced the 2016 men's soccer schedule as the Mountain Hawks aim to build upon their 2015 Patriot League Championship season. Lehigh will host eight home games at the Ulrich Sports Complex and play a number of formidable opponents, including seven teams that won ten-plus games a season ago.
The Mountain Hawks will open the 2016 season with a tough test at the JMU Invitational. Lehigh will face host James Madison to kick off the 2016 campaign on Friday Aug. 26 before taking on Radford, a team that went 14-4-2 and made an NCAA Tournament appearance a season ago, on Aug. 28.
The Mountain Hawks will then head back to Bethlehem to make their home debut against Delaware on Friday Sept. 2 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Blue Hens made a CAA Championship appearance in 2015 to complement their 10-win season. Lehigh will then hit the road for a pair of non-league matches at Seton Hall (Sept. 10) and Fairleigh Dickinson (Sept. 13).
The Mountain Hawks return home to the Ulrich Sports Complex to host a pair of in-state foes in the final pre-league tune-ups. Lehigh will welcome Robert Morris, a team that secured 10 wins a season ago, on Sept. 17 before taking on Penn Sept. 20.
"In addition to using non-league play to prepare for league action, we have to look at our non-league schedule as an opportunity to improve our RPI and get results on the road," said Koski. "We should look at non-league games as potential at-large games and our league games as an opportunity to get into the playoffs and win a championship. We have to raise our athletes' appreciation and intensity for our non-league games because they are really important for us to have success."
Lehigh will open Patriot League play on Sept. 24 when the Mountain Hawks travel north to Holy Cross. Following a mid-week home game against Saint Francis (Pa.), a squad that made an NEC Championship appearance a season ago, the Mountain Hawks will continue league play at 2015 Patriot League regular-season champion Colgate on Oct. 1.
"The league road games are the most difficult games we'll play in the course of the league season because it's a change of location and scenery," said Koski. "The league has gotten better year-to-year, which means that most of the teams will be better at home than they are on the road. We have to make sure we're prepared to travel, and our non-league schedule will help get us a little experience on the road early in the season."
Lehigh makes its home Patriot League debut on Wednesday Oct. 5 when the Mountain Hawks welcome Navy to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh will then remain home to welcome Army on Oct. 8.
Following a brief road swing to Loyola (Oct. 15) and Fordham (Oct. 18), Lehigh's final non-league game of the regular season, the Mountain Hawks will return home to host Boston University on Oct. 22. The Terriers, in addition to Lehigh, also represented the Patriot League in the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Mountain Hawks will head to archrival Lafayette Oct. 26 before taking a trip to Bucknell on Oct. 29. Lehigh will then close out the regular season with a rematch of last year's Patriot League Championship game when the Mountain Hawks host American on Saturday Nov. 5.
The Patriot League Quarterfinals are set for Tuesday November 8. The top two seeds receive byes while the No. 3 seed hosts No. 6 and No. 4 hosts No. 5. The four teams still standing will play in the semifinals and finals at the top overall seed the weekend of November 11-13.
The Mountain Hawks finished 13-6-3 last season en route to a Patriot League Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. Lehigh sat atop the Northeast regional rankings in the final regular season NSCAA poll.
"It's important for our team to realize that the championship was last year," said Koski. "It's always good to build on a successful season, but this season is a new team with new players and we need to start from ground zero and raise the bar. We want to have higher aspirations for this program and find ways to become a top 25 program in the country. We're going to push them hard to raise their standards and their expectations."
