Lehigh makes home Patriot League debut against Holy Cross Sunday-Monday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will hosts its first Patriot League home series of the season when the Mountain Hawks welcome Holy Cross to Legacy Park for a four-game series that will now be played Sunday and Monday due to Saturday's impending weather. Doubleheaders are set for 12 p.m. both days. Free video of all four games will be available on the Patriot League Network.
The Sunday-Monday series will be the second Patriot League series of the season for both teams. The Mountain Hawks went 1-3 at Bucknell in the opening league weekend. Senior Mike Garzillo garnered Patriot League Player of the Week honors after leading Lehigh offensively at Bucknell with a .533 (8-for-15) batting average, six extra-base hits, four RBI and four runs scored. Junior John Scarr hit .417 (5-for-12) against the Bison, while classmate Connor Donovan batted .400 (6-for-15) with three home runs. Sophomore starting pitcher Sam Ashey earned the win on the mound in Lehigh's 10-1 game-two victory as he fired seven one-run innings.
Garzillo and junior Jacen Nalesnik lead Lehigh for the season with .330 batting averages. Garzillo (.578), Donovan (.549) and junior Jacen Nalesnik (.530) hold the three top slugging percentages in the Patriot League. Nalesnik and Garzillo lead the league with 29 runs scored, while Donnelly ranks second with 26 RBI. Garzillo and junior David Young lead the league and rank 48th nationally with 11 doubles apiece.
Ashey and sophomore Mark Washington lead the Lehigh pitching staff with three wins apiece, while classmate Peter Moore has secured two victories. Senior Kevin Long picked up his first win of the season in Lehigh's most recent game Wednesday as he threw 1.1 hitless innings of relief in a 10-4 win over Coppin State. Long, Ashey, freshman Ethan Frohman and junior Matt Kozemchak started Lehigh's four games at Bucknell last weekend. Senior Kevin Boswick has allowed just one run in his last six innings out of the Lehigh bullpen.
Holy Cross carries an 11-19 overall record and 2-2 mark in Patriot League play into the four-game series at Legacy Park. The Crusaders split their league opening weekend at Navy as Holy Cross captured 3-1 and 4-2 wins Saturday in Annapolis, Md. before the Mids came back for 9-0 and 4-2 wins Sunday. The Crusaders hit just .180 as a team last weekend as no Holy Cross player recorded more than three hits on the weekend. Holy Cross starting pitchers Brendan King and Phil Reese earned the wins on the mound in Saturday's victories, while Jon Escobar recorded saves in both contests.
Bill Schlich leads Holy Cross for the season with a .295 batting average, while Anthony Critelli follows with a .271 mark. Critelli leads the team with 19 RBI, while Nick Lovullo has scored a team-best 19 runs. The Mountain Hawks earned a 6-2 win in game one before winning the decisive game three by a score of 7-1 en route to becoming the eventual league champions. Lehigh won the first three games of last year's regular-season series at Holy Cross to walk away with a 3-1 series win. The Mountain Hawks have won nine of the last 11 games against the Crusaders.
Following the series against Holy Cross, Lehigh will remain home to host Rider at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday before resuming Patriot League play at preseason favorite Navy next weekend.
