Lehigh falls 7-0 to strong Bucknell squad

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team suffered a tough 7-0 loss at Bucknell Wednesday afternoon. The Bison won the doubles point and followed with all six singles victories, four of which were tight three-set battles, to move to 9-5 overall and 3-0 against league opponents. The Mountain Hawks fall to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League action.
"Bucknell was obviously the better team today and I give Coach Helt and her team a lot of credit for outplaying us," said head coach Wouter Hendrix. "This was one of the toughest losses of my career as literally nothing went our way. This result will hurt for a while but we need to keep our heads up."
The duo of junior Cassidy Cruz and freshman Grace Lin opened the match with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Bison won the top two flights by respective scores of 6-4 and 6-3 to grab the doubles point.
Bucknell's Lauren Fishbein opened singles action with a 6-4, 6-2 win over junior Jamie Campisi. Sophomore Briana Maravich fell 7-5, 6-2 at the fourth flight of singles before Bucknell's Mishi Papich was able to clinch the match for the Bison with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Cruz at No. 5 singles.
Sophomore Christina Auyeung put together a tough battle at the top flight of singles, but Bucknell's Maria Cioffi ran her league-match winning streak to 18 with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-4 victory. Sophomore Kirstin Godau fell 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 to Stephanie Pino at No. 6 singles before Lisa Jouravleva secured the 7-0 win for the Bison with a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 win over Lin at the second flight.
Lehigh returns to action Sunday when the Mountain Hawks head to West Point, N.Y. to take on defending Patriot League champion Boston University at 2 p.m.
