BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team will close out its regular season when it hosts Bucknell on Friday at 5 p.m. with postseason seeding implications on the line. With a win, the Mountain Hawks are guaranteed a home game in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. With a loss, however, Lehigh will play on the road as the No. 6 seed.
With a win on Friday, the Mountain Hawks would be the third or fourth seed. If Holy Cross defeats Colgate on Saturday, it would set up a two-way tie for third place (with Boston University) and Lehigh would own the tiebreaker due to its win over the Terriers earlier this month. If Colgate beats the Crusaders, there would be a three-way tie for second place and Boston University would be the No. 3 seed, the Mountain Hawks the No. 4 seed and the Raiders the No. 5 seed. A loss would bump Lehigh down to the No. 6 seed.
Lehigh stands 11-4 overall and 5-3 in Patriot League play following a 10-8 loss at Colgate. The Mountain Hawks' offense was led by freshman Courtney Henig, who scored four goals to tie a career high. Junior Julianne D'Orazio also had a strong game with two goals, two caused turnovers, two draw controls and a groundball. D'Orazio has now scored a goal in five straight games (eight goals in that span) and has tallied multiple draw controls in six consecutive contests.
Along with Henig, the Mountain Hawks' offense has been led by the tandem of junior Allison LaBeau and sophomore Haley Wentzel, who stand 1-2 on the team in points. LaBeau's 37 goals and 29 assists lead the team, while Wentzel's 20 goals and 11 assists rank third and second, respectively. D'Orazio has helped anchor the defense as the Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania native leads the team in caused turnovers (26) and is second on the team in groundballs (32).
Despite dropping its last three contests, the Bison still stand 10-6 overall and 4-4 in the league, having punched their ticket to the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2009. Bucknell is in the midst of an impressive turnaround after winning just three Patriot League games over the previous six seasons. Coming off losses to Navy, Loyola and Colgate, Bucknell will be the No. 5 seed (with a win on Friday) or the No. 6 seed (with a loss). Bucknell's offensive attack is well balanced with Eve Lukowski, Emily Becker, Maddy Molinari and Gretchen Richter all eclipsing the 30-goal mark this season. Lukowski leads the way with 57 points (30 goals, 27 assists) while Becker owns 55 points (team-leading 37 goals, 18 assists) and Christina Manis has 54 points (24 goals, 30 assists). In total, five Bison have 45 points or more. Richter leads the team with 70 draw controls while Annie Gilbertson has a team-leading 26 caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Jamie DeWitt leads the way with 35 groundballs while owning a 9.78 GAA and .454 save percentage having started all 16 games.
Lehigh defeated Bucknell last season by a score of 17-4 on the road. Shutting out Bucknell 11-0 in the first half, Carli Sukonik tallied six goals while LaBeau notched a goal and three assists in the win. Overall, the Mountain Hawks have won six straight games against the Bison and lead the all-time series, 27-12.
Following Friday's game, Lehigh returns to action in the Patriot League Quarterfinals next Tuesday.
