Avery Wins High Jump as Lehigh Competes at Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Courtney Avery picked up a win in the high jump on Saturday at the Larry Ellis Invitational, where she came within one centimeter of her own program record of 1.79 meters. The Mountain Hawks capped this weekend's action on Saturday at the two-day event, hosted by Princeton University.

On Friday, junior Marissa Karl paced Lehigh in 39th place of the 1500 meter Elite race, setting a new PR of 4:36.86, with sophomore Hannah Leskow running a season-best time of 4:40.50 in 48th place. Sophomore Laura Barnes followed in 56th place overall (4:44.00).

Freshman Maura Henderson turned in her fastest 5K of the season (17:43.08) to finish in 27th place. Senior Arielle Weiner topped her PR to take 49th place in 18:12.26, three places ahead of her classmate, Shannon Wright (18:23.80).

On Saturday, sophomore Liyala Dickens tacked up a new PR in the 200m dash (25.58) to place 23rd overall. Senior Ann O'Connell and sophomore Rachel Okun represented the Brown and White in the 800 meter run, with O'Connell placing 23rd (2:18.34) and Okun 39th (2:21.25) in the field of 56 runners.

Freshman Stephanie Hayes competed in Saturday's 1500m run, turning in a solid ninth place finish of 4:42.15. Freshman Stacie Nadel captured the top spot in her section of the 3K, ultimately finishing in 12th place overall in her collegiate outdoor 3,000m debut with a time of 10:37.52.

In the 400 hurdles, Noreen Byrne took 18th overall in personal record time of 1:03.77.

In Friday's field events, junior Michaela Bubak and sophomore Paige Grossman both set new PRs in the hammer throw with Bubak taking 11th place (50.62 meters), with Grossman finishing in 21st (45.54m).

Saturday's field events were highlighted by Avery's victory in the high jump, where she came within one centimeter of tying her own school record, leading the field of 23 competitors at a height of 1.78m. Senior Gabrielle Wardle (1.70m) finished fifth overall and junior Brittany Le Jouan finished in 14th at 1.60m. The three jumpers entered Saturday as the top three high jumpers in the Patriot League so far this season.

Fresh off setting the school triple jump record last weekend, Kiana Wright claimed 14th place overall after leaping 11.59 meters in the triple. Sophomore Amanda Youngblood placed 15th (12.18m) in the shot put and 12th in the discus throw (40.69m).

Elsewhere, senior Elizabeth Weiler represented Lehigh at the Virginia Challenge at UVA, where she finished 19th overall in Friday evening's 10K, running the fastest time in the Patriot League this season (35:24.91). The meet featured over 1,200 athletes, including 80 that are ranked in the NCAA top 25 in events they were contending in at the meet.

Lehigh will host the Lehigh Games next Friday-Saturday April 29-30 at the Goodman Campus Track, and will simultaneously compete at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia this Thursday-Saturday.
