HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Marshall used a three-run eighth inning to capture a 4-2 win over the Lehigh baseball team in the opener of a three-game series Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1, while the Thundering Herd improves to 2-5.
The Herd scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, but senior starter Kevin Long was able to work his way out of a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage as Marshall took a 1-0 lead. Marshall starter Chase Boster limited the Mountain Hawks to one hit through the first four innings until Lehigh was able to get on the board in the top of the fifth. Junior David Young was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame before classmate Connor Donovan sent a single through the left side. Senior Anthony Rinaldi laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third before an infield single from senior Mackey Price was followed by a Marshall error as both Mountain Hawks crossed the plate to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
Long settled in after the first inning, retiring 13-straight batters before sophomore Sam Ashey took the mound in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning. Long finished with an impressive line of one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work.
Ashey kept the Herd hitless for the next two innings until Marshall was able to take the lead in the eighth. A walk was followed by a bunt single and back-to-back RBI base hits that gave the Herd a 3-2 lead with one out in the eighth before Donovan took the mound. Marshall followed with a sacrifice fly to add an insurance run and give the Herd a 4-2 advantage.
The Mountain Hawks put two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but Marshall reliever Burris Warner worked out of trouble to secure the save and 4-2 win for the Herd.
Lehigh and Marshall wrap up their three-game series Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
