
Nalesnik earns Player of the Week honors as Lehigh prepares to host two midweek games

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball junior Jacen Nalesnik has been named the Patriot League Player of the Week, as announced by the league Monday afternoon. Nalesnik and the Mountain Hawks will host a pair of midweek matchups at Legacy Park this week as Lehigh welcomes NYIT Tuesday and Penn Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and 3 p.m. Wednesday and free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
Nalesnik belted three home runs and batted .524 last week in Lehigh's five Spring Break games in Winter Haven, Fla. The outfielder went 11-for-21 at the plate with five extra-base hits as he added two triples to go along with the three home runs. He also scored eight runs and recorded five RBI. Nalesnik had at least one hit and one run scored in each of the five games, while notching an extra-base hit in four of the five contests. The Lehighton, Pa. native raised his batting average from .295 to .369 over the course of the week. He was 5-for-9 with a pair of triples, two runs scored and an RBI in Lehigh's doubleheader against Bradley and Maine on Tuesday before putting together a 5-for-8 showing at the plate with three home runs and five runs scored the final two games of a three-game series against Dartmouth. This is the first Patriot League Player of the Week award of Nalesnik's career.
The Mountain Hawks carry a 5-11 overall record into this week's games and are coming off their Spring Break trip to Florida where Lehigh went 2-3. All three of Lehigh's losses were by one run or in extra innings, while the Mountain Hawks swept a Friday doubleheader (5-4 and 15-7) over Dartmouth. Nalesnik and junior Patrick Donnelly are both hitting .369 to lead the Lehigh bats, while classmates Connor Donovan and David Young hold .321 and .308 batting averages, respectively. Donnelly, Donovan and senior Mackey Price have all recorded a team-best 12 RBI, while Nalesnik leads the team with 16 runs scored.
Sophomore reliever Mark Washington has picked up two wins on the mound to lead the Lehigh pitching staff, while freshman Ethan Frohman and sophomores Peter Moore and Sam Ashey have all earned a victory. Frohman leads the squad with a 1.80 ERA. Senior Kevin Boswick has struck out a team-best 15 batters, while Ashey, freshman Cole McManimon and senior Kevin Long follow with 12 strikeouts a piece.
NYIT carries a 7-9 record into Tuesday's 3:30 p.m. contest at Legacy Park. The Bears split a four-game series at UMass Lowell over the weekend in the team's most recent action. Joe Daru leads the Bears in several offensive categories including batting average (.383), RBI (11), runs scored (17) and stolen bases (5). NYIT is hitting .221 as a team compared to its opponents' average of .253. Starting pitchers Dixon Marble and David Plotkin have both earned two wins on the mound, while six different Bears have made starts. Elias Martinez leads the squad with 24 strikeouts and the Bears hold a 4.75 team ERA. Lehigh and NYIT will be meeting for the first time.
Penn will bring a 4-8 overall record into Wednesday's 3 p.m. game at Legacy Park. The Quakers are coming off a 2-1 series win over Binghamton over the weekend. Penn has also earned wins over North Florida (3-2) and Holy Cross (4-3) this season. Matt Tola leads the Quakers with a .381 batting average, while Gary Tesch (.359) and Matt O'Neill (.333) are also hitting over .300 to pace a Penn squad that bats .230 as a team. Matt Greskoff has knocked in a team-best nine runs. Four different Quakers have earned wins on the mound, while five have gotten starting nods. Gabe Kleiman holds a 2.30 ERA, while Jake Nelson hasn't allowed a run in three appearances and six innings out of the Quaker bullpen. Penn holds a 4.50 team ERA. Lehigh is 32-77-3 all-time vs. Penn and the Quakers claimed the most recent meeting 13-2 in 2013.
Following the games against NYIT and Penn, Lehigh will play Manhattan in a three-game series Friday and Saturday. Friday's single game will be played at Legacy Park at 3 p.m., while a Saturday doubleheader will be played at Manhattan.
