PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh rowing team wrapped up its second spring race on the Schuylkill River Saturday as the women rowed against Temple and Delaware while the men faced Delaware. The Women's Varsity Eight led the way with a second-place finish.
Â
"Overall, as a team, we raced the way we practiced, which is a good thing and a bad thing," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We found out that we have some speed, yet we have some areas to work on. In particular, on the women's side, we need to focus more on our starts. On the men's side, we found out that Delaware has a lot of power. We have a lot of respect for them with how strong they are."
Â
Spearheading Saturday's effort was the Women's Varsity Eight, who finished in 6:44.71, trailing Temple who finished in 6:36.10 and ahead of Delaware (6:49.39).
Â
"They put themselves in a position where they had a chance to compete and they did compete from start to finish, which was impressive," said Conley. "Going the majority of the course and staying in contact with Temple is a pretty impressive feat."
Â
Meanwhile, the Women's Second Varsity Eight finished in 7:08.86. On the men's side, the Varsity Eight finished in 6:20.20, the Frosh/Novice Four in 7:23.05 while a pair of boats in the Varsity Four finished in 7:15.57 and 7:22.85, respectively.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will now return to action next Saturday when they compete in the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River.
Â
"In this upcoming week of practice, we're going to focus a lot more on competition," said Conley. "Putting ourselves in more competitive situations will help us refine the ends of the race we need to work on."
