BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Allison LaBeau scored five goals while sophomore Haley Wentzel added a career-high four goals to lead the Lehigh women's lacrosse team to a 12-3 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 first-half lead and didn't look back.
"I'm thrilled to get a home win again," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I think it's something the team is really focused on and I'm proud of them for recognizing how important that is with our schedule this year. A lot of players did their jobs today. It was great to see all our players get some minutes."
LaBeau finished the game with six points behind five goals and an assist. Wentzel also dished an assist to finish with a career-high five points, shattering her previous career high of two. Along with the goals from LaBeau and Wentzel, three other Mountain Hawks scored a goal. Senior Kendall Garden and freshman Kellie Gough tallied a goal and assist while freshman Kaitlyn Quinn scored a goal.
"I'm really proud of Haley today," said Redfern. "She has that type of potential to put big points up for us, and it was against a very good goalkeeper. I thought their keeper was outstanding today and really kept them in the game."
Garden added five groundballs, three draw controls and three caused turnovers in an impressive all-around effort. Junior Julianne D'Orazio impressed defensively as well, posting three draw controls, four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Wentzel scored the first of her four goals less than two minutes into the game. LaBeau followed with two straight goals before Wentzel's second gave Lehigh a 4-0 advantage with 18:52 left in the first half. LaBeau then scored her third at the 16:25 mark to make the score 5-0.
Mount St. Mary's got on the scoreboard at the 8:23 mark, then each team scored once more as Lehigh took a 6-2 lead into halftime.
The Mountain Hawks controlled the second half as Garden scored just 1:01 into the stanza. Goals from Quinn and Wentzel followed to give Lehigh a 9-2 advantage with 19:39 on the clock. The Mountaineers scored at the 11:32 mark, but Lehigh ended the game on a 3-0 run which included Gough's first-career goal at the 3:26 mark. Gough also assisted Wentzel's fourth goal in the final minute which gave the Mountain Hawks a 12-3 lead, proving to be the final.
Lehigh finished with a dominant 38-13 shots edge and 21-13 advantage in groundballs. The Mountain Hawks also held a 9-8 edge in draw controls. Lehigh helped force 20 Mountaineers' turnovers, causing 12 of them. Junior Taylor Tvedt tallied seven saves across Steph Rurkowski, who was stellar with 18 stops for the Mountaineers.
"One of the things we did really well, especially in the second half, was contain them defensively and force to help," said Redfern. "We had some beautiful double teams. Julianne and Kendall helped the defense get some doubles on the ball and come away with some caused turnovers."
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday when they host Iona at 3 p.m.
