BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a valiant effort in its season opener, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Yale. The Mountain Hawks will be searching for their first victory of the 2016 campaign. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start from Ulrich Sports Complex and live video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
After an early 5-0 deficit to No. 6 Penn State, the Mountain Hawks responded by scoring three of the final five goals in the first half fueled behind the play of junior Allison LaBeau, who was responsible for two of the three goal The Nittany Lions started the second half much like the first, tallying five unanswered goals to start the half, to take a 12-3 and put the game essentially out of reach. Lehigh wouldn't quit and ended the game scoring three of the game's final four goals and the Mountain Hawks fell by a score of 13-6.
Junior Taylor Tvedt accumulated 12 saves in goal, along with two caused turnovers, which came on intercepted passes. Labeau finished the game with three points behind two goals and one assist while senior Kendall Garden posted a goal, two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Sunday marks the season opener for Yale, who's coming off a 7-8 season. Yale returns four experienced players on defense who started at least nine games last season including junior Victoria Moore. The Concord, Mass. native was a second-team All-Ivy League selection last season. On the other side of the field, the Bulldogs return one of their leading scorers from last year in junior Tess McEvoy. McEvoy tallied 23 points behind 16 goals and seven assists last spring. This will also be Yale's first game with new head coach Erica LaGrow at the helm.
Yale will look for its third straight victory over the Mountain Hawks in the all-time series. The Bulldogs defeated Lehigh in an 8-7 thriller in 2014 and won convincingly, 16-8, at the Ulrich Sports Complex in 2013. The 2013 meeting marked the first-ever game between the two schools.
Lehigh will return to action next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks host Mount St. Mary's. The game will begin at 3 p.m. as part of a lacrosse doubleheader. The Lehigh men's team also hosts Holy Cross at 12 p.m.
