Record-setting offensive day for Mayes, Lehigh in 63-35 win at Yale

10/1/2016 7:07:00 PM | Football

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Playing without its starting quarterback, the Lehigh football team enjoyed a record-setting afternoon at the Yale Bowl, racking up 651 yards of offense in a 63-35 win over Yale Saturday afternoon.

One week after senior Nick Shafnisky garnered national Offensive Player of the Week honors, sophomore Brad Mayes stepped in and completed 33-of-46 passes for a school and Yale Bowl record 524 yards and a school record-tying six touchdowns.

Five different Mountain Hawks scored touchdowns, led by junior Troy Pelletier, who caught 13 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Gatlin Casey added six catches for 169 yards and two scores as he and Pelletier went over 100 receiving yards for the second consecutive week.

Lehigh's 524 passing yards established a new team record as well. The Mountain Hawks, and Mayes broke the Yale Bowl passing record previously held by Lehigh's Bob Aylsworth, who threw for 454 yards in Lehigh's initial win in the Bowl in 1994.

With the victory, Lehigh completes a three-game sweep of Ivy League opponents and improves to 3-2 on the season. Yale drops to 0-3 with the loss.

"Coming in we remembered what happened last time we were in the Yale Bowl," Lehigh head coach Andy Coen said. "Our team was very excited to get back here and compete against Yale... we changed quite a bit of how we operated our offense and were able to find a lot of wide open wide receivers. I'm really happy for our team and our players and how they stuck together."

The Mountain Hawks scored on five of their first six offensive possessions to take a 35-7 lead with 11:35 remaining in the first half. Mayes threw touchdown passes to Pelletier covering 50 and 27 yards and connected with Casey for a 54-yard score, while sophomores Dominick Bragalone and Micco Brisker both rushed for a touchdown.

Yale refused to go away, answering with a 21-0 spurt of its own, highlighted by an 82-yard punt return touchdown by Jason Alessi before Bragalone's second touchdown of the half gave the Mountain Hawks a 42-28 lead at halftime.

Lehigh came out of the locker room strong, scoring on three of its four third-quarter possessions to go up 63-28. Mayes threw touchdown passes to senior Trevor Socarras plus Pelletier and Casey in that third period to become the fifth Lehigh quarterback to throw six touchdown passes in a game and the first since Chris Lum against New Hampshire in 2011.

"It was a late decision for us to play Brad today," Coen said. "We have all the confidence in the world in Brad. He stepped in last fall for two big games and did a great job and we knew he'd be able to handle the job today. It was a game time decision and obviously stepped up and did a tremendous job.

"Our offensive staff does a tremendous job each week of preparing our quarterbacks and wide receivers for us to attack different defenses that we see," Coen continued. "Congratulations to Brad on a great day. I was actually here as the offensive coordinator when we set the previous record (in 1994). Lehigh's now 1-2 in passing yards in the Yale Bowl."

Defensively, the Mountain Hawks fell victim to several big plays but limited the Bulldogs to just 363 yards. The Mountain Hawks intercepted Yale's Tre Moore twice and sacked him three times. Junior Tyler Cavenas and senior Evan Harvey led Lehigh with six tackles apiece. Harvey added a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and his second interception in as many weeks.

The fourth quarter was marred by an injury to Lehigh junior defensive back Quentin Jones, who went down after a hit on a Moore scramble. Jones was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. At the time of his injury, Jones had feeling and movement in his extremities.

For Yale, Moore completed just 11-of-26 for 120 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Deshawn Salter led the Bulldogs with 15 rushes for 151 yards. Yale out-gained Lehigh on the ground 243-127. Bragalone rushed 17 times for 56 yards and two touchdowns for Lehigh while Brisker added 50 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

"We're blessed to have a wonderful group of guys who love to play football, who are passionate about their teammates and they love to play the game," Coen said. "I'm glad they're with us."

The Mountain Hawks return to Goodman Stadium next Saturday to open Patriot League play against defending champion Colgate. Kickoff is set for just after 12:30 p.m. as part of Lehigh's Family Weekend. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during normal business hours.
