BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Patriot League play begins for Lehigh and Colgate as the Mountain Hawks, winners of three straight, welcome the defending Patriot League champions to Goodman Stadium Saturday as part of Lehigh's Family Weekend. Starting in place of Nick Shafnisky, sophomore Brad Mayes threw for a school record 524 yards and tied a school mark with six touchdown passes as Lehigh completed a three-game sweep of Ivy League foes with a 63-35 win at Yale last weekend. The Mountain Hawks tallied 21 points in each of the first three quarters with five different Lehigh players reaching the end zone.

The defending Patriot League champions, and a FCS quarterfinalist a season ago, Colgate comes to town for its league opener with a 1-3 record. The Raiders throttled Yale 55-13 on Sept. 17 but lost their season opener at Syracuse and have dropped their last two games, at Richmond and last week at home against Cornell. Colgate led Cornell 21-0 after one quarter and 31-12 at the half but the Big Red outscored the Raiders 27-7 after halftime.

Dual threat Jake Melville returns as the starting quarterback for Colgate. Receiver John Maddaluna leads Colgate with 477 yards and is coming off an 11-catch, 261-yard, 3-touchdown showing against Cornell. Colgate boast the Patriot League's top rushing defense. Charles Cairnie is the top tackler with 30 stops, while preseason Defensive Player of the Year Kyle Diener has 28. Defensive end Pat Afriyie already has four sacks and nine tackles-for-loss.

With senior Nick Shafnisky limited due to injury sophomore Brad Mayes turned in a record-setting performance in his first start of the season. Mayes completed 33-of-46 passes for a school and Yale Bowl-record 524 yards and matched a school record with six touchdown passes. The previous school record was 480 yards set by Scott Semptimphelter against Lafayette in 1992. That mark was challenged by Nick Shafnisky, who threw for 461 against Princeton. Mayes broke the Yale Bowl record held by another Lehigh quarterback. Bob Aylsworth '96 threw for 454 yards in Lehigh's first-ever win at the Yale Bowl in 1994. Mayes was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. He owns a 3-0 career record as a starter with 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions in those starts.

In recent years, Lehigh's offensive success has been predicated on its ability to generate big plays, however, through three games, the Mountain Hawks' longest offensive play from scrimmage covered just 30 yards. In its last two games, Lehigh's big play attack has come to life with eight plays that covered 40 yards or longer. Those big plays include five passes to Gatlin Casey, including four long touchdowns, and three long passes to Troy Pelletier, including a 50-yard touchdown at Yale.

Lehigh's 63 point outburst at Yale marked the first time the Mountain Hawks reached the 60 point mark since their 69-0 win over Georgetown in 2002.  The 63 points also tied the record for the most points allowed by Yale at the Yale Bowl. Lehigh scored 42 first-half points, the most for the Brown and White since scoring 49 in the first half of the 2002 Georgetown game. The Mountain Hawks also posted a 40-point half last season, scoring 41 in the first half of their win over Holy Cross. Lehigh has not reached the 70-point plateau since a 78-0 win over Lafayette in 1917.

Lehigh meets Colgate for the 55th time with the Raiders holding a 29-23 lead.  There have also been two ties. Lehigh has won four of the last six meetings, but Colgate's wins in 2012 and 2015 clinched Patriot League titles for the Raiders. Andy Coen is 5-5 versus Colgate and 3-2 versus the Raiders at Goodman Stadium.

Lehigh and Colgate are the two most successful programs in Patriot League Football history as they have combined to win or share 18 Patriot League titles in 30 years of Patriot League Football. With their annual matchup seemingly always having championship implications, it's unusual for the Mountain Hawks and Raiders to meet this early. From 1986-2015 Lehigh and Colgate met before October 15 just five times. Saturday's game marks the earliest meeting between Lehigh and Colgate since a 61-28 Colgate win on Oct. 4, 1997. Lehigh has faced Colgate in its league opener just once in 30 previous seasons, a 20-9 win over the Raiders in game two, on Sept. 16, 1995. The other three early meetings were in the first three years of the Patriot League's (then-Colonial League) existence: Sept. 20, 1986; Oct. 10, 1987; and Oct. 8, 1988. Lehigh won all three of those games.

Saturday's game kicks off just after 12:30 from Goodman Stadium. Tickets for the game are still available, and may be purchased in one of three ways: by visiting the Lehigh ticket office located in Stabler Arena, by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, or on-line anytime at LehighTickets.com. Saturday's Lehigh-Colgate Family Weekend game is presented by PSECU.

Lehigh will play its next two games away from Goodman Stadium, beginning next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks visit Georgetown. The Mountain Hawks have won 14 straight games against the Hoyas. Game time is set for 2 p.m. from Cooper Field in Washington, D.C.
