EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team wasn't able to complete the season sweep of its archrival Monday at Lafayette's Metzgar Athletic Complex as the Leopards pulled out a narrow 106-97 victory in the annual outdoor Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet. The Mountain Hawks won nine events, highlighted by sophomore Courtney Avery's record-setting high jump.
Avery set a new school record in the high jump, which was one of only two events completed as originally scheduled on Saturday, with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 1.77 meters. The jump bests her own school record of 1.76 meters.
Senior Carly Deskins earned a pair of event victories in the shot put (11.98 meters) and discus throw (36.58 meters). Sophomore Michaela Bubak claimed first in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.41 meters, while classmate Sarah Cassidy grabbed first in the javelin with a heave of 39.11 meters.
"Courtney is the real deal and she's just going to keep getting better and better," said head coach Matt Utesch. "It's just a matter of time before she hits that next bar. I thought Carly Deskins did great today as well, and she's really grown as a student-athlete."
Senior Victoria Mullane claimed both the 800 meter run and 1,500 meter run titles with respective times of 2:16.03 and 4:44.59. Classmate Shannon Wright earned first in the 5,000 meter run with a clip of 18:03.63.
Sophomore Katie Hatler picked up first in the 100 meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in 14.64 seconds.
Lehigh will split its squad between three meets this weekend as the Mountain Hawks travel to Moravian, Bucknell and George Mason.
