The Rivalry: Lehigh vs. Lafayette
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-1 win over Lafayette Monday in a match that was moved from Lafayette to Lehigh's Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks won the top two doubles flights and four of the first five singles matches to post their 14th consecutive win over the Leopards.
Â
The Mountain Hawks finish the regular season at 11-8 overall and 4-3 in the Patriot League. Lehigh will likely be the No. 4 seed when the Patriot League Tournament seeds and schedule are unveiled Tuesday.
Â
The match began with Lehigh taking the top two doubles flights, dropping just one game in the process. Lehigh's top team of freshman Christina Auyeung and sophomore Jamie Campisi clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 win over Caroline Nixon and Lauren Tracy after the No. 2 team of sophomore Cassidy Cruz and senior Abby Farrell blanked Rocine Moschella and Tori Almeida 8-0. The match at No. 3 singles was not finished, with Lehigh's team of freshmen Kirstin Godau and Abby Duddy trailing 3-2.
Â
Campisi and Cruz carried their strong doubles play over to singles, dropping just two combined games in their straight set wins. At the No. 2 flight, Cruz downed Moschella 6-0, 6-2, while Campisi blanked Jordyn Spellberg 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
Â
"Lafayette always brings it against us," Lehigh head coach Wouter Hendrix said. "Their third doubles and first singles were very impressive. They made us earn every bit of this win. Cassidy Cruz and Jamie Campisi played lights out today."
Â
Lafayette recorded its only point when freshman Briana Maravich had to retire due to injury in her match with Catherine Senopoulos at No. 4 singles.
Â
Auyeung clinched the rivalry win with a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Nixon at the top flight, while Godau blanked Almeida at No. 5. The match at No. 6 was not finished, with Farrell winning the first ten games against Tracy.
Â
Lafayette's regular season finishes at 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the league.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will begin the Patriot League Tournament with a quarterfinal match Friday at Colgate's Abrahamson Courts.
Â
"Our women can beat anyone on any given day," Hendrix said. "What I am happiest about is that they perform consistently at a high level at every spot in the lineup. That takes a high level of commitment, focus, and pride."
