PHILADELPHIA - Three Lehigh rowing crews advanced to the grand finals at the Kerr Cup Saturday, highlighted by the Women's Second Varsity Eight finishing second overall and the Men's Freshmen Eight placing third. The Women's Varsity Eight also qualified for the grand finals. The racing took place on the Schuylkill River.
Â
"I thought it was a fantastic day where nearly all the Lehigh boats stepped up and raced some good competition," said head coach Brian Conley. "The Women's Second Varsity Eight really came out of the gate swinging, which we needed to see from them. They were pretty excited about how composed and strong they stayed through the race. The freshmen men did a fantastic job of continuing to improve on their results from week-to-week. They're excited heading into the next two weeks leading into Dad Vails. The Women's Varsity Eight made the grand finals, but needs to continue to do the little things moving forward to get on the medal stand."
Â
After the Men's Varsity Pair came in sixth in its heat, the Men's Freshmen Eight set the tone by placing second with a time of 6:20.09, trailing only Drexel. The crew went on to finish third in the finals with a time of 6:26.23.
Â
The Women's Varsity Four and Men's Varsity Four continued by finishing fifth and fourth in their heats, respectively. The Women's Varsity Eight then came in third in its heat (6:54.90) to advance to the finals where it placed sixth. The Second Varsity Eight came in second in its heat (7:09.66) and then second in the grand finals (7:09.66), beating notable local programs Fordham, Temple, Fairfield and Marist.
Â
In total, 27 of Lehigh's 39 student-athletes who competed on Saturday advanced to the finals.
Â
"It's fantastic to see for the first time in a while, Lehigh place over 50 percent of its team in the grand finals," said Conley.
Â
The Mountain Hawks now look ahead to their championship races beginning with the Dad Vail Regatta from May 8-9 followed by the Patriot League Championships (for the women) the following weekend.
Â
"I think this is great opportunity for the team to get back to basics," said Conley. "We're going to use this time to solidify our fundamentals and start to improve upon our smaller, technical aspects of racing so we can find that extra speed heading into championship season."
